### Simple Question (basic statistics)

Is there a term for the distance from the data point furthest from the mean, to the mean? For example, if my data set is: [3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10] then mean = 6.6 The data point furthest from mean is 3, so: 6.6 -3 = 3.6 This is close to half the range, but not quite…certainly I’m not the only...

### Birthday Problem (variation)

Someone made a claim about birthdays that made me think of the well-known birthday problem. I wanted to compute the probability but was unable to. I'd appreciate your help. What is the probability that at least 15 students in a class of 20 share the same birth month (assuming equally likely birth mo...

I think I might have found the answer. http://www.agu.org/journals/ABS/1982/RG020i003p00457.shtml The review claims this research resolves the time problem. They investigated the effect of different continental arrangements and determined that factor was not significant. The important factor seems t...

I didn't look at the paper, but didn't Zamfir say the graph in the article collapses 2-3 billion years ago, contrary to your claim in the OP of 1 billion years? If he is referring to Figure 14 on page 1957 then I don't understand the graph. To me it looks as if the orbit collapses 1 billion years a...

I understand your point about the limits of modeling accuracy. For an easy example we can think of objects falling very close to the ground. The model required for their decent is very simple. But as height increases you eventually have to consider air resistance which was negligible at low heights....

### Age of the Moon

Sources commonly claim the moon is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The most widely accepted theory proposes that Mars-sized protoplanet collided with Earth. Meanwhile there is scientific research suggesting the moon's orbit does not support this theory. Everyone knows that the moon is slowly re...

I always figured that "10" was 100% of the watts. (for the record, I believe that "watts" are tiny creatures that live in my amplifier and scream in pain at various frequencies when an electric current is passed through them). So turning it to 9 means that 90% of them are being ...

Also, you mean F as in hexadecimal? If so shouldn't it be 15? In any case, it is probably a bad idea to use letters A-F for volume on a musical device. "Sorry, this song is in the key of G and my amp only goes to F." Good point. If you start counting a 1, 15 would be "F," and 16...

Obviously the bricks need to be suspended off the ground before flapping his wings for this to work. The beginning height of the bricks would then be the maximum attainable altitude (once he get that high, the bricks will touch the ground and no longer providing 91% of the lift). So this can be done...
