Part of me wonders if he made a Ford host to get shot by Delores.[/spoiler] Or is the host version the one that is still alive, and he let his meat go? dun dun dun! Though he does already have the child version of himself around so he could consider himself set on the "persistence" front.

Polite I want to be polite. By being aggressive in my posts I get your backs up and it is that much harder for you to read anything I write in a sympathetic light. It makes you grasp at the flimsiest of counters just so you can stick it to me. I mean it's a better look on you than the Socratic faux...

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

Yeah but if you are just at the Maxwell level of E&M understanding, which is as you say a very nice level to be at (and I wouldn't say it's been proven "wrong," more "incomplete," perhaps), then Maxwell is not saying "An EM wave is the sum of many photons." If you a...

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

Yup. Though it's only the static M part that does no work, and not all fields are static anyway. "Field" is a much broader concept, but even the narrow static boring bits can be quantized and when this happens, you can observe photons.

Yeah it is so totally not like how a water wave is made up of particle like molecules, but then exhibit some special wave behavior in bulk.
Fields all the time, wave and particle are just weird classical analogies that work more or less well depending on which you way squint.

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

How is the magnetic field not photons? What does photon mean to you? For me, a photon is a little shortcut for talking about the particle-ish behavior in QED, but not so important. Light and magnetism are both just shades of QED. If you want to split out the radiative term in a propogating field as ...

For 1, pq requires less ink to write than p-p^2. Concise notation is a beautiful thing. Maybe concise means, "Let's use fewer symbols / less ink." But maybe it means, "Let's use fewer distinct symbols." Either is absolutely fine. You can use p-p^2 all over the place, completely i...

Re: Quantum Fluctuations questions

In the Casimir system it's not important whether the energy is negative or just less than the outside. You can define a new zero anywhere you like, because in almost all of physics, it is only differences in energy that matters. But it makes very good sense to do subtraction based on the Hadamard fo...

Also it can be done rigorously by subtracting the Hadamard form from the two point function, rather than by subtracting the vacuum expectation value for the vacuum from the stress tensor. Many worlds is not something which can be true or not, because it is an interpretation. You may or may not find it compelling storytelling. But if it makes no distinct predictions from, say, decoherent histories, then it can have no distinct truth value or evidence. And I don't mean that in a pessim...
