Re: University advice for a Canadian student

What do people think of the University of Alberta for math/computer science/electrical engineering? I could always go to Waterloo/McGill/Toronto, but the University of Alberta is so much cheaper for me as I'm already in Edmonton. Also, how hard is it to get involved in undergrad research at most uni...

Re: Calc or Stats

http://www.ted.com/talks/arthur_benjamin_s_formula_for_changing_math_education.html?awesm=on.ted.com_1G In HS, do you feel calc really deserves its spot as the "top" maths or are there other maths fields that are more relevant to a well-rounded education? Is the top question, is it not? T...

Re: Calc or Stats

I think Calc or Stats is a false dichotomy; there's many other options that would make sense. For example, further algebra (say, field theory and group theory) , number theory , etc. Sure, one might argue that those are less practical (and is that really true? Nowadays, fields and groups + number th...

Re: Finding people with similar interests

Look, you just seem resigned. You posted this topic looking for advice, but you're shooting every suggestion down. A large part of your problem : you say that you are too shy and anxious to talk, yet it seems like exactly what you want is to talk. This is where your particular condition really hurts...

Re: Finding people with similar interests

It seems like you've given up on a lot of your fellow physics students- vis-a-vis their friend potential, anyways- and I wouldn't be so quick to do so. I would find it very odd if you can't find at least a small group of people who share an interest as common as video games; at least here in Alberta...

Re: Need help with a math puzzle

Catalan's conjecture - it's a theorem now, but I do not know its 'theorem' name- states : The only solution for x^a - y^b = 1 where x , a, y , b are all > 1 is 3^2 - 2^3 = 1. This might help; a solution reducing to this probably fulfills b) as well. Edit : This was my first thought, but, after playi...

Re: Put a computer in a TI Calculator's body

15-30 seconds? I've seen desktop computers that boot faster. HP50G seems like it would be a much better choice... As for the question asked by the OP, putting a computer in a calculator's body : I've not heard of it, but if you plan to attempt this your problem would probably be interfacing to the s...

Re: Choosing courses for gr 10 next year, is this a good ide

In Alberta (province of Canada). I took Grade 9 math (by correspondence) over the summer of my grade 9 year, and then took Math 10 Pure in grade 9. It worked out well enough. I don't know what province the poster above is from, but the standard highest-level classes in Alberta : - Math 24 ( 'Everyda...

Computer Science Within about 2 minutes, I'll always get asked one of the following questions: "So my computer isn't working..." "Can you make, like, a mod for Halo, so like..." "I have a friend that needs help with her website..." "So could you hack into the scho...

Re: My school fails at computer security...

It's always fun to screw around - echo 'virus installing...' on April Fools (I have yet to do so... I might ,soon. It depends on whether whoever would deal with it can take a joke.).I do, however, generally agree with the poster above me. One thing I don't agree on is the telling the person in charg...

hintss : be a black hat if you want to choose that (generally) terrible career path. But don't be a petty script kiddie on your school network. At least do something like blackhat SEO that makes you more than petty.

I can't tell you how you feel, but I really do suggest you go with your strongest interest. That sounds like computer science, but it might turn out to be medicine. I suggest you go forwards trying out both of those things. Take some medicine classes, and then ask yourself : what do I want to do goi...

Re: Intriguing IQ Test Question

For reading/maths intelligence tests, I've always mopped the floor. In Kindergarten, I did a definition/context/etc reading and knowledge test (maybe that was what yours was) and I was reading like a seventh grader should be :D. Why? I used to spend all day reading books back then. I played some vid...

Re: Looking for Class Hobbies

I need a hobby to keep myself busy in class. >: Something interesting to work on, but nothing too terribly distracting. I'm a junior in high school so... yeah. I currently have all notebook and pencil classes, so my only resources is what I bring. I used to bring a piece of graph paper with a set o...

Turiski : I'm not in the United States, and , in a 1 3/4-hour-by-car radius around me, there's two schools with AP programs, both offering only a few AP courses. I have, actually , been looking at one of them , but due to where it is, it would be rather inconvenient. My reason for wanting to enter I...

Re: Intriguing IQ Test Question

That was a question on an IQ test? That's a pretty pathetic question, actually. I don't think it's an accurate measure of IQ at all. The worst questions I've seen on IQ tests don't really assume much, but they do assume some things that might hurt the chances of someone not used to North American so...

Re: Drowning in school

I am someone that is going to enter IB soon, so this post scared me.... currently, I don't really do any homework at all. Actually, I do about 3 hours of homework a month, max. Studying? I don't. I really should, of course, but I can't really justify the huge amount of time needed to go any higher t...
