Re: "these ones"

If you asked me which pair of pants were my favourites, I might respond with 'I like these', 'these' or 'these ones'. I wouldn't respond with 'I like these ones'. For me, this wouldn't be a selection made according to grammar - my choice of phrasing is more strongly linked to the prosody of the phra...

Re: Living alone: anecdotes and such

My living alone experiences are probably tempered by the fact that I not only live alone, but I live 2 - 3 hours away from my family and close friends (at least until I made friends after moving, which for me takes at least 6 months). Three weeks after my last move, I had to get a dog, because night...

I'm not sure if this was intended to be humorous, but it made me laugh when I first saw it. I'm no physicist, and I certainly don't understand all the concepts, but the gist I got was that they wanted to play a 'pick a card' game to see if they should run the LHC for any given test/input set, becaus...

Feel like I've just seriously necro'd this... Been looking for some inspiration for a workshop I and some colleagues are running on vocabulary learning. One of the exercises is to get teachers to talk about their favourite words - and why. Needed some things to get them started - and I've been drawi...

On reading the strip, I giggled, and nearly choked on my lettuce. This was before getting to the alt-text. The mental image of the smug, self-righteous Lucy freaking out because of a few well-chosen words from Linus arose in my mind... just as it appeared on the page when I last read Peanuts comics,...

I saw a speech pathologist when I moved to Connecticut from Northeastern Mass. I think they thought I was retahded. Though my accent is gone, if I'm drunk, tired or angry, I get wicked Bostonian. Take that, speech pathologist! Because there's a problem with having an accent, or speaking a different...

I believe extra time should be negotiated. There are some students for whom extra time is appropriate - students with a specific learning difficulty/disability, for example a student with diagnosed dyslexia/dysgraphia in the presence of average-or-above IQ, or students who are sitting a test in a la...

Re: Pronunciation of "two", "to", "too" as /tsu/ or /tu/

It must be what many of you agree on that the aspiration makes it sound sibilant to me. Why don't other words with the /t/ phoneme, like <ten>, sound like the beginning of <two>? Does how a phoneme is pronounced depend often on the vowel behind it? This is what we call 'co-articulation'. We don't s...

Phonemics fail.
Sure, 'queueing' contains multiple consecutive vowels when written, but when spoken, has only two.
As an alternative, include sonorous consonants such as liquids, nasals and glides - mmmm? Add a little intonation, and you can proposition someone without saying a single word.

It follows that Charn had a sacrificed Son of God, and Jadis was the Anti-Him of that world. Wouldn't it follow that God(/Jesus/Aslan/[Charn-equivalent]) lost the battle in that world, since Jadis successfully ruined it? Doesn't seem like the kind of message C.S. Lewis would want to convey.
