Re: Thinking about Grad School

I would like to do a PhD in econ and eventually infiltrate academia. However I have been a student my whole life and would like to see some more of the world before I go straight to another school. Anyone have thoughts on the pros of taking a year off weighed against the con of losing my research m...

Re: 0808: The Economic Argument

And if lottery ticket actually worked, investors would buy them. Actually, there is a rare situation where they do work... where the "true" prize... is greater than the cost of buying every ticket I assume by "rare" you mean "utterly non-existent." People don't run lot...

Re: Eye contact with strangers

You know that moment, when you are walking to work, and two blocks away you see someone you know. Crap, now it's too far to say "hello" and an awkwardly long time to by looking at each other, especially if they are only a professional acquaintance. That's when I welcome a stranger to make ...

Just a quick note: I started a small business in college and looking back on that I know I learned more from that process than from any one class.

Re: GRE Test Prep

The GRE books are all pretty similar. I used Princeton Review but also did a bunch of free practice questions online. I can say that your math score will definitely improve with practice. If you have forgotten any basic geometry formulas or algebra techniques, make sure you know them before you take...

Re: Guidelines for election of head of student council

Funny story: When I was campaigning to be student body president, my fellow candidates and I had to make speeches. We all picked famous political speeches and modified them slightly to be about high school. Imagine "4 score and 7 years ago..." and "we will fight them on the beaches......

Re: Quadruple majoring

University is about more than academics. Losing out on the entire cultural experience of university by huddling in a pile of books all hours of the day would be tragic. An important part of the experience is the stuff that isn't in class--socializing with intelligent people from different walks of ...

Re: A "major" (no pun intended) conundrum

Some general advice on major picking from someone who recently got a Bachelors: Your internships and relationships matter more than your major. If you want to do science or some technical degree in grad school, get a solid math foundation, but the specific major you get will not limit what you want ...
