Re: 1168: Tar

I'd use: tar c . I wouldn't use standard input. The tar process would run continuously, rather than exiting successfully. I also wouldn't make up random filenames, since tar probably exits unsuccessfully if they don't exist. And I wouldn't dare try any command other than tar. The only danger with my...

Re: 1089:"Internal Monologue"

As an alternative to being so self-conscious, one could simply listen to what the person was saying...! Engaging in the conversation works surprisingly well when trying to leave them with a good impression. That's not to say that being so self-conscious will leave them with a BAD impression (that's ...

Re: 1086: "Eyelash Wish Log"

Why not just wish for happiness? Or is that traditionally forbidden as well?

Re: 0850: "World According To Americans"

Somebody do a handwriting analysis to see if this was actually a group of people or just Randall. There are definitely attempts at differences handwriting, at least, but some expert should satisfy our/my curiosity (other people want to know too, right?).

I could be wrong, but I think it's safe to say he's referring to the GNU/Hurd and Google's Android projects, specifically indicating that they represent examples of the two loops (taking forever to fix messy code vs. taking forever to write good code).

Re: 0844: "Good Code"

Of course, there's always the alternative: adjust the requirements to fit the existing (already working) code ;-)
Unfortunately, it's not as profitable as some would like...

Re: 0836: "Sickness"

I know I've been beaten to this already, but I'll post it anyway just in case somebody wants it over-explained a bit differently... The alt text is a reference to statistics: see the Wikipedia page on "Statistical Significance". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember the p-value b...

Re: 0814: Diode

I understand diodes without any problems, but I didn't get the comic until I noticed that the band on the diode was drawn. I expected to be able to tell just out of the context, but once I noticed that the band was indeed present, it made the whole comic a lot easier to grasp. In hindsight, I suppos...

Re: 0811: "Starlight"

Wikipedia seems to have an intelligent section on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflection_%28physics%29 Mechanisms of reflection In the classical electrodynamics, light is considered as electromagnetic wave, which is governed by the Maxwell Equations. Light waves incident on a material induce ...
