Thanks everyone! all problems solved. lowercase L looks exactly like one, and M-R allows me to write past the margins. Now I just need to build the new case!

Good suggestion, but both lowercase and uppercase I's look different, yet the typewriter still has a '0' key.

Well, the problem is; I have found a typewriter. The model is a Smith-Corona S301. It seems to work fairly well, with no mechanical faults. BUT!
