Re: 1816: "Mispronunciation"

I pronounce epitome "EPPY-tome", but EpiPen "uh-PIE-pen".

Wait, that is not how you pronounce epitome?

Re: 1806: "Borrow Your Laptop"

map <C-ScrollWheelUp> u map <C-ScrollWheelDown> <C-R> works for me in gvim :-). I agree that this is a brilliant idea, if you work with the mouse a lot, but in vim you usually don’t. As for desktop keyboards with a function-key: I am actually using a Logitech Y-SAE71 with such a key. The difference...

Re: 1344: "Digits"

This article and the ensuing comments are excellent. After reading it, the game is a lot easier to beat. It's still no less addicting though. Thanks for the link. So there’s an AI here: http://ov3y.github.io/2048-AI/ Some guy then turned the AI against you. Try it! – it’s just too ridiculously hard...

Re: 1292: Pi vs. Tau

As far as I know, Euclidean space is the only one where the circumference:diameter ratio is constant everywhere. Where you have positive curvature, that ratio decreases as the diameter increases, and where you have negative curvature it increases. That is a correct observation. The [url]http://en.w...

Re: 1292: Pi vs. Tau

But surely the existence of something else called tau is an argument for using pi, since as far as I'm aware pi is unambiguous? Not quite. Just look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_(disambiguation) . In mathematics π is used in many places. For example in topology it denotes the fundamental grou...

Re: 1292: Pi vs. Tau

I guess you misunderstood me. I did say “using base 5“. So a and b are indeed the digits auf π and τ in base 5. Just to be clear, I made my script use only mpmath: import sympy.mpmath as mp mp.mp.dps = 100000 def get_digits(nr, base, digits): fval = nr - int(nr) for _ in range(digits): fval *= base ...

Re: 1292: Pi vs. Tau

Using base 5, and the more logical order rock, paper, scissors, Spock, lizard, the match-up function looks like def rpssl(a, b): if a == b: #tie return None else: #a wins iff: return ((a-b)%5)%2 == 1 and the result for the first 10⁵ digits after the comma is: π wins 39943 times; τ wins 39960 times; ...

Ok, wait.. Octal digits of pau according to bc (with a few extra digits beyond 200 since bc was having trouble getting the last 3 digits right): echo "scale=190; obase=8; 6*a(1)" | bc -l 4.554574376314416443236234514475050122425471573015650314763354527003\ 04316771261165505467475703133125...

As for self-references, I also quite enjoyed when in StarGate the Alien Marten created the TV-Show “Wormhole X-Treme”.

What distro is he using? Everyone knows that root’s mail is stored in /var/mail/root (not /var/spool/mail/root), as defined by the FHS. /var/spool/mail works just fine: $ ls -l /var/spool/mail lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 2009-10-29 21:39 /var/spool/mail -> ../mail Well at least here on Gentoo its the ...
