Re: Lunar Eclipse and New Moon

If the moon orbits at an angle, why does it change angle to get directly in the sunlight's path? If it's changing angle, why doesn't it eventually progress to orbiting perpendicular to the ecliptic, and then back again?

Re: 1712: Politifact

Of the things I've seen xkcd randomly take issue with, this would top the list, were it not for the one where xkcd raged against using "literally" correctly.

Re: The "What-If?" Book

Hm, that's disappointing. I was going to put this book on my xmas list, but I think I will wait for a second version with corrections. Still definitely want to get it after that, though!

I think a better question is whether telling people to their faces what you don't like about them is really something that isn't going to end in very damaging backlash for you.

Re: 0810: Constructive

Korea has a system in place in website with a lot of traffic that makes anyone who puts down a comment to confirm their identity with an ID number which they get from the Korea Communications Commission before the comment is allowed to be posted. When I heard about this, I was very surprised we wer...

Man, so it's no longer enough to have a handful of strong passwords? I mean, I knew this intellectually all along, but geez, what good are passwords when I can't even remember them all?

Re: "Toot" discussion (#757)

Air horns are worse. It is harder to damage someone's ears with a vuvuzela, although in bulk anything is possible. Presumably this came out of some stockpile of comics and was drawn before the World Cup fiasco. Vuvuzelas were shoe-horned into the joke via the alt-text, but if you intended to referen...

I have returned from the lurk to say that this comic is subpar and I am disappointed. This is the kind of randomness-relying nonsense I would expect from, I don't know, Ctrl+Alt+Del or some crap. :(

This comic made me realize that I actually didn't have to play: I was disqualified long ago for constantly breaking rule 3. Everyone should realize this loophole. Ah god damn it. i was at a UU con all weekend full of people who were losing all around me and it was making me crazy. finally i get home...

What comics would you link on the main page?

We all know that there are a certain 5 strips always linked on the xkcd page. But there have been many worthy xkcd comics. Are there any you would add or remove from that section? One that you feel does (not) sufficiently embody something excellent or integral to xkcd? &c., discuss. Myself, I wa...

AvalonXQ, I'm hiding my response because I don't wish to clutter the thread. @1: You're using the King James Version if your version of the Commandments reads like that. That version's flaws and mistranslations have been addressed many times, and it is safe to say that it is unreliable even ...

Re: "Helping" Discussion

This is one point where I like the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, who states that it is always wrong for a rational being (human) to lie to another one, however children, who are driven by wants, do not fall under the definition of a rational being and therefore can be lied to in certain situations.....

I hope no one does this. At best the bobcat dies, and it's animal cruelty; at worst an unwitting postal worker or recipient dies, and it's murder. Well, actually, at best the sender dies, and the world is better off with 1 fewer assholes, but whatever. HAT GUY IS NOT A ROLE MODEL, EVERYONE. DON'T IM...

I've been reading this comic for perhaps a year, and I like that it appeals to my nerdiness. Except when it misinterprets Godwin & such. Anyway, most strips I like. I get most of my nerdy stimuli via another forum, so I never really considered actually joining this forum. I'm only joining now be...
