Re: Storing Nuclear Waste on the Moon

Can confirm that even using very well-vetted launch systems for relatively routine tasks (taking satellites to GEO), the accident rate is *very* non-trivial. A quick glance at the insurance rates for orbital launches can tell you that much - or, for that matter, the fact that insurance is a part of ...

Ah, my mistake - I think I was primarily thinking of radiation sickness rather than long-term cancer risk (as referenced in Issues Of Weighty Importance such as "is the decay from potassium in bananas a health risk"). Overall decays seems like a reasonable way to calculate it under LNT mod...

Even if we completely ignore the historical decays and suddenly stop all coal power plants, we'll get the radioactivity of all nuclear accidents together from coal in 40 years. I completely agree on the health-and-safety merits of nuclear power relative to coal, but this statistic feels slightly di...

20K is a very cold ambient for sea level... ;) There's a few assumptions that would need to be made. How is the temperature of the coffee cup maintained - does it magically stay at 5800K indefinitely, or does the coffee start at 5800K and gradually cool, giving off its energy to its surroundings? From my incomplete remembrance of my EE classes back in college (though it was never my strongest subject), they tend to show up a lot in phase calculations and frequency-domain analysis, such as Fourier/Laplace transforms. Usually somewhere in the exponent of e, next to a pi.
