Re: Guest comics

I love this kind of stuff! In this case, it's one obscure webcomic referencing another obscure webcomic. This is the stuff private jokes are made of!! I don't think XKCD is that obscure (at least as far as webcomics go). It was making the front page of Reddit there for a while until I lost interest...

Re: "Network" Discussion

"... When Linux/Mac win in a decade or so the game will be over..." Sorry, but this quote just comes across as just plain uneducated. Linux and Mac have plenty of viruses out there because their own security holes. I still remember the Mac vs PC ad that said that Macs don't get viruses (i...

Re: "Future" Discussion

My interpretation is that the timelines of the girl (and her boyfriend) and Future Guy are going in opposite directions. In (let's call it) panel 4, Future Guy meets the girl and the boyfriend. He falls for her. Maybe they hit it off, and maybe there was some conflict between Future Guy and the boyf...

Re: "Indecision" Discussion

It did seem weird, but after failing to rationalize any concrete argument against it, I decided, hey, whatever works for them. Did you try "You're brother and sister!"? I meant rationalize to myself . I make choices in my own life other people think are weird. I'm not going to begrudge so...

Re: "Exploits of a Mom"

Aren't you guys forgetting a 'commit;' statement in there somewhere? SQL is divided into two subsets. I think they're called DML (data manipulation language) and DDL (data definition language). select, insert, update, and delete are DML and require a commit, because they can be rolled back. DDL (dr...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD - The one you actually post in

Hi. I'm posting here because I will probably be bugged about it otherwise at some point. 26/male/within the fallout zone of Washington DC. I'm a computer programmer, am musically inclined and play a decent guitar, and get most of the jokes on xkcd, except the heavy math ones. I'm not a spambot. But ...

Your computer's bit bucket is probably full. There should be a tray on the side that you can pull out to empty it.

Linked from the wikipedia page on Duff's Device: http://www.lysator.liu.se/c/duffs-device.html Actually, I have another revolting way to use switches to implement interrupt driven state machines but it's too horrid to go into. Now my curiosity's piqued... ah, found it: http://www.chiark.greenend.org...

A couple posters mentioned not being able to jump out of nested loops without goto. Java does let you do this with loop labels: outer_loop: for (int i = 0 ; i < 10; i++){ for(int j = 0; j < 10; j++){ break outer_loop; } System.out.println("dmoney is wrong"...
