Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is MAGIC!

I didn't have high hopes for Keep Calm and Flutter On based on the plot (really, Celestia?!), but it actually was really, really good. Discord's realization that he'd rather have a friend at the expense of reducing the amount of havoc he causes was treated really well and was still true to his c...

Re: Trying to decide on PhD or masters..or nothing

I enjoy teaching. I did an intro biology course which was okay but grading, like Jorpho said, was *terrible*. Lots of grades, some terribly written papers with no improvement or obvious desire to improve. It's necessary to keep a stock pile of alcohol to get through such papers. I do one-on-one teac...

Re: Trying to decide on PhD or masters..or nothing

Mine's a somewhat small state school that mostly focuses on undergrads but is big into undergraduate research. Most of the grads are on teaching assistantships (like me), but a couple of the professors have some sweet grants (and are hotshots in their field) and can support RAs. Institutions like mi...

Hi, graduate student in biology here. Insofar as what is more valuable, the PhD or the Masters, you should figure out what you want, and that should inform your decision of whether or not you go for the PhD or the Masters. I've heard that in some spheres, having a Masters provides you with a better...

Even though it's much easier to get there, I think the whole anoxic enviroment and lithic precipitation thing might be a little problematic without literal hills of cash. So this week's episode had a call-out to the bronies (Derpy), but also to a much, much older sitcom: Is anyone else familiar with the chocolate factory scene from "I Love Lucy"? When I saw the girls line up on the conveyor belt I was totally hoping for that reference. I definitely was not...

I liked it. Our audience of grad students laughed a lot, and even the jokes I remembered from the strip still made me smile. It's not imperative to see it and the acting won't win any Oscars or anything, but I'd certainly go see it if you can.
