### Re: What-If 0118: "Physical Salary"

I think we're missing the ultimate application here:

What if we channel the money into a large money turbine and then pay the operator according to how much electricity he generates?

When I saw this comic at 3AM last night, my sleep-deprived brain was completely unable to comprehend the mirror question. One measly hour of sleep later and I got it immediately. Clearly I should have gotten in a little more shut-eye before finals, but hey, what can I do? Yeah, my immediate answer t...

I also noticed the issue with the doppler shift question, having just done that problem recently. Solving the relativistic doppler shift equation for u yields; u = [((w_source)/(w_observed))^2 -1]/[((w_source)/(w_observed))^2 + 1] The correct velocity should be closer to; u = c/7 (varying a bit, dep...

True story; I read todays comic while working a problem in my analytical chem book. It included;

􏰆0.167 89% as an error...

Which I read as 0.167 and 89%, prompting serious confusion.

After reading the comic, I figured out that it was in fact 0.16789%. Yet another problem solved by Randall.

Well if they had two separate timelines, and you had control over where each portal connected to, then you could do something like go through the portal, and reorient it to point back to the past of the other world, and step back through it. It would be less that time moves faster on one side or th...

The fact that so many people are trying to do math based on the time dilation between Narnia and the real world probably has C.S. Lewis rolling in his grave right about now. I found it pretty amusing as well. Especially with so many people doing the math, as if nobody else had already done it, with...

Personally, I would force quit, and have a look at Console for clues on how to make sure the app doesn't crash again, repair permissions, and if my other options fail me, restore a recent backup from Time Machine. Wait... can someone who's finished second-grade math argue with that equivalence? Doing simple long division, one can see that stopping the threes at any point would be less than 1/3, and capping it with a digit larger than three would be greater than 1/3. Therefore 0.3... must be 1/3 by the "...

Easy proof 1/3 = 0.3... 0.9... = 3 * 0.3... 3 * 0.3... = 3 * 1/3 3 * 1/3 = 3/3 = 1 therefore 0.9... is exactly equal to 1, because it is exactly three times (the decimal representation of) one third. Apple may be a little slower than you might think since H.264 is the only video format iPods (and similar) can play. Google has yet to play their real trump card - Youtube. Oh my god... that's brilliant. I'd much rather read the entire equation on a single line. Which is great, until you have to multiply/divide one fraction (or sum of fractions) by another. Also, math (after algebra) is not really a static thing, with all the erasing and moving and squeezing symbols into spaces I'm doing already, I...

### Re: PC != Windows

The way I see it, Macs are PC's in the same way that squares are rectangles. Usually, it's much more helpful to refer to a square as a square, rather than a rectangle, because the square has special properties. A mac can run osx without modification of the OS or kexts, a PC can run one or more OS's ...
