Re: 1232: "Realistic Criteria"

You are right about that. Most starvation these days (outside of areas that have recently been hit by major disasters) happens not because the food does not exist, but because those who control the food are unwilling to let the hungry people have any of it. It is thus a social/political issue rathe...

Re: 1168: Tar

Technically he's right. I mean, I'm guessing you've got rar and zip on Mac etc. as well. But then his statement makes no sense. It only makes sense if it defines Unix as “non-PC”. Uh, as far as I'm aware *nix can use both ZIP and RAR... But I admit my statement might not entirely make sense. It was...

Re: 1168: Tar

Yeah, my usage of *nix is so minimal right now I'd be dead unless "man tar" counted. :P The title text does bring up a good point though. I mean, on the PC side we're still mucking around with ZIP and RAR which came out in 1989 and 1993 respectively. That's 20+ year old compression technol...

Re: 1166: "Argument"

I took an applied science class last semester, "Generators, Transformers, and Motors", in which the teacher and one of the students were convinced that a solar cell capable of producing enough energy to power a light bulb could be powered by that same light bulb to produce the energy need...

Re: 1166: "Argument"

Toast without butter would just fall indiscriminately. As far as I've always been told it is "Buttered toast always lands butter side down." That eliminates any condition where the toast is not buttered.

Re: 1167: "Star Trek into Darkness"

I'm actually surprised that everything I've seen ignores the most obvious argument that immediately came to my mind for "Into Darkness" being a subtitle. This is the Star Trek name and trademark. Having Star Trek be the title with Into Darkness as a subtitle is fully leveraging the tradema...

"...rheum, and gin."

This made me laugh because.... Rum and Gin. (Sure, it is pronounced "room", so maybe the pun wasn't intentional but it still made me laugh.)

Re: 1103: "Nine"

I must have the lazy man's microwave. Most numbers above 5 are completely ignored unless I'm using the kitchen timer feature on it. My microwave has "Quick start" for all buttons 1-5. Press the button and it instantly starts microwaving for that many minutes. The most used button though is...

Re: 1106: "ADD"

A few things... As far as I'm aware there are not two different things called ADD and ADHD. They are both the same disorder, it is just that one of them is the more modern and acceptable term for the disorder (I think it is ADHD). One of the things I find most interesting about ADHD is how stimulant...

Re: 1096: "Clinically Studied Ingredient"

Hmm, I think I need to market some powdered plutonium ore in pill form.... "100% all Natural!" and "Rigorously government tested!" Personally, my favorite marketing ploy is the "Made with 100% ALL NATURAL ingredients!" A lot of people seem to read this as all of the ing...

Re: 1005: "SOPA"

Assuming this sopa thing passes, whats to stop americans from using a european dns server to get around any blocks? If nothing, does sopa do anything at all other than put a massive thorn in the sides of webmasters everywhere? Actually, if you read the SOPA provisions it allows the US to move again...

Re: 0995: "Coin Star"

I can see the need that Coin Star might fill, but I personally don't like paying for services I can get for free. Back when I used cash for all of my transactions I had a special "savings" plan. Basically I only spent full bills, and any coins from change went into a jar at the end of the ...

Re: 0993: "Brand Awareness"

I can verify that some generic brands are just name brands in different packages. I used to work for Frito Lay (Makers of Lays potato chips, Doritos, Cheetos, and other snack foods) packaging the bags of product into boxes for shipping. We had something we called "Institutionalized" produc...

Re: 0992: "Mnemonics"

I hate to be a pedant (but then this IS XKCD), but none of the mnemonics for oreders of operations actually work. The order is PEDMAS (or BODMAS for British readers {brackets, orders, divide, multipy, add, subtract}). All of the mnemonics in the strip read as PE MD AS - multiply and divide have bee...

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

You're right of course on the first part, I don't know what I was thinking with the math there. But the thing that makes this weird for me is that if light always travels at (c) regardless of position or velocity of the observer the math doesn't add up. Of course I may be neglecting some complex for...

Re: RELATIVITY QUESTIONS! (and other common queries)

Ok so a few questions which are bugging me, and maybe they are completely stupid... I've seen it mentioned many times in this thread (Only made it to like page 13) that light travels at the same speed (c) regardless of who is observing it and what speed they are traveling. I have a hangup on this. I...
