No, but there's an Iain Banks story of a somewhat similar exchange from the plant's point of view.

"Odd Appendage" in "The State of the Art."

Re: 1118: "Microsoft"

Post-marxists of the Frankfurt School call this "false needs". Hartmut Rosa wrote a book called "Alienation and Acceleration" which I highly recommend (not only because I translated it in French, but because it is a very good little book about the acceleration of the way of life...

Wake me when it's impractical or difficult for...a user to use a rival, comprehensive search engine. Wake me when a tech company spends half a billion dollars developing and marketing something with no hope of revenue, even as a loss leader for other products, and its board doesn't fire the CEO. Wa...

Laugh now, but the time will tell that the penis size based tax bracket is a stroke of genius. Even the most fervent tea baggers (especially the ones who always seem to bring the biggest cars/guns to the rallies) will be frantically calling the IRS insisting that they were under-taxed. Best comment.

Re: 0951: "Working"

Forget the time aspect, that's not important. Unless your time would otherwise be spent earning money then in a situation where driving to the other station is saving money on the total fuel cost it *is* better to make the trip. That's ridiculous. You don't have to earn income from time spent not d...

Re: 0947: “Investing”

The problem is that a decade is too short a time to show the nature of the asymptotics. I realize you were leading up to a joke, but I think the point is that you can just spend the $219 now and sock away $1,219 in 10 years when you're earning more and end up at the same place. Of course that's ass...

Re: 0883: "Pain Rating"

After I went to the hospital with an unknown abdominal pain and rated it a "7" or so, I found out that it was a case of kidney stones. The admitting nurse said she'd had one patient in on two seperate occasions; once with kidney stones, and once because he had been shot in the abdomen wit...

Re: 0878: "Model Rail"

According to the same article cited above, it's HO in North American (NMRA) and H0 in Europe (NEM). So the truth apparently depends on where you're standing. As a child growing up with a model railroad (in North America), I assumed it was the letter, not the number, on the model of the other scales:...

Re: 0852: "Local g"

Regarding the question mark controversy... There is a demand for an answer; therefore, it is a question. It may be rhetorical, i.e., the asker may not actually expect an answer, but it is still asking for one. And how do you know that the asker wasn't genuinely seeking a response? (Was that questio...
