Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

Sometimes the one-based indexes we use for most things at work are kinda nice. I wonder if we would use zero-based conventions if designing from scratch nowadays if there weren't so many legacy languages that had them. There's not any reason the compiler couldn't do the address translation behind t...

Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

Yeah, C's "struct tm" uses a 0-based month number but a 1-based day number. And originally it used a two-digit year, but now out of backwards compatibility it uses "year - 1900". So today is 13/11/116 according to C. It is garbage, and every language that does the same and justi...

That should definitely count -- I mean, your boss shouldn't be able to evade you so you couldn't go. Besides, it's an old trick to write a two week's notice, date it two weeks back, add a coffee stain for effect and drop it into the niche between your boss's desk and the wall. :D

Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

Because of how they're commonly used, monads are *usually* operated on through chain() (called "bind" or ">>=" in Haskell). This is just a map() followed by a join(), composed together for convenience (and possibly given a more efficient implementation). Nitpick: the most common...

I just spent a lot of time entertaining myself by guessing the book from which the passages in my Kindle's vocabulary trainer, saved together with the words I looked up while reading, were taken. Maybe it's just that sentences, out of context, do always have a scent of mystery to them, but I noticed...

A Canticle for Leibowitz. Best writing of any of the books mentioned in this thread, although The Handmaid's Tale surpasses it in some other aspects, and is my winner if post-nuclear worlds are not considered sufficiently distopian for lack of a ridiculously evil authoritarian government.

Madge's division pretty much lines up with mine — pretty much has to line up with mine. Because she's your scummate, or is there another reason for this? Damn, I just noticed something. If we do lynch Lawrencelot today, we will be at 3/3 tomorrow, but scum will have full vote strength.

Unvote

We're still at LYLO, but we cannot afford to lynch Lawrencelot, since lynching that particular scum would lose us the game.

Also interesting that SDK unvotes, given that he knows that it will be hard for town to coordinate on a train, even with the things as they stand. You know, what I find jarring is that ever since DJ has been accused of being a jester, he has played extremely jestery. Which makes me kind of conspicious -- he might actually be scum trying to masquerade as the jester.

There's also the possibility that the Mafia withheld the kill.
