Man pages!? A new user's X.Org is broken, the new user doesn't know what X.Org is, and the first place (s)he should look is the thick, obfuscating man pages!? Provided said new user is the same crazy kind of person as I am, then yes -- you only need to teach them two commands: apropos and man. :D M...

Re: Tom Lehrer vs. Peter Schickele

What about Anna Russell?

Not being particularly musically literate, I'd go with Tom Lehrer, the apple to those two citrus fruits. His musical humour is generally about other subjects than music itself.

Re: best terminal emulator

So what's the difference? Why do you prefer the one to the other? I use Gnome terminal, just because it was the default, but for all I know I would benefit from using something else instead.

Re: Best *nix Desktop Environment/Window Manager/whatever

Perhaps it's wrong of me to vote on a "best" when I've never even heard of FVWM, XFCE, or Window Maker before, but on the other hand, this is a religious wars forum, and I don't need to attend CCD to burn papists... That being said, I like Ion3. I like Ion3 and I particularly despise Gnome...

Re: Farscape

Better than Firefly or Battlestar Galactica? *gasp* Quick: distract me with Claudia Black and everything will be fine. Between Aeryn and Crichton, the show really plays against standard gender configurations, which is wonderful and makes for delightful characterization -- John Crichton is a uniquely...

Go to Chicago sometime. There's still some remnants of Second City kicking around there, and that used to be th standard. I've seen one comedy troupe in Chicago that were pretty amusing. Neofuturists? As for it being accurate? Yes there's sex, yes, John Barrowman is pretty, and yes, he flirts a lot...

Dead ringers spoof of Torchwood: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6aeEyirFjBI http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Z8QrPZeuvU Pretty accurate really... Really? All I'm seeing is that apparently British sketch comedy is falling to the same dangerously low standards that have become prevalent in the US. Nobody said...

Re: What is it with nerds and medievalism?

If I were to hazard a guess (and I were -- er, am), I'd say it was the Pre-Raphaelites' fault. They made the Dark Ages look so sexy. I'm curious to know how common this Dark-Age fixation is in non-Anglophone geeks. Is it just that the best ancestral English adventure stories happen to be the Arthuri...

Thank God I do most of my online socializing in the part of the internet where female is the default assumption. I know exactly three men there (that I'm aware of). A while back there was a big to-do about someone claiming they were a guy when they weren't really. Even beyond the limited-male-asshol...

90?! Sir, we count ourself as a singular being, and your crude reference to our meatform is tasteless and unbefitting of a lady/gentleman/disguised raptor.

Hey, we found R'lyeh! Horrifying city of impossible geometry, presented as scholarship on scholarship on reports? It fits, doesn't it? House of Leaves did what H. P. Lovecraft continually tried to do: it made a horror out of the unknown and impossible. I know Lovecraft has his share of crazed fans*,...

Although the smartness of informing the police is debatable, I do think it would be wise to somehow alert the neighborhood. The park is very small, and it is generally full of very, very small children whose parents/daycare minders would be very, very, very wroth if their charges were stepped on. I ...
