Re: The Failure of American Schools

I would say that the way we teach has a bigger impact than anything else. Sure you can blame the unions but states that don't have unions have crappy schools too. As for private school, they can cherry pick their students and once you take into account SES, they're really not that much better. Howev...

Re: Supreme Court to California: Reduce Prison Population

We simply don't have the infrastructure to provide adequate care for the seriously mentally ill. There's really no where for them to go if they're released from prison. There's not adequate infrastructure/funding to imprison them, either. This sounds like A Modest Proposal. 'We don't have adequate ...

They might as well just make it a Red Alert FPS. If you're going to have such a ridiculous plot, you might as well just go all the way and make it as crazy and over the top as possible.

Development of AI really should focus on the interaction between the computer and its environment.

Research going back to the 70's suggest that even a function as simple as seeing has to be learned.

There are services to help people released from prison. The problem is that consciousness isn't a real thing. It's a label that we give to an arbitrary set of things. It may be based on things that can be objectively measured but the idea itself is not real. It's like color or race. For example, the color red is based on visible wavelengths of light that...

Heroin was marketed as a substitute for morphine. You didn't look up laudanum. And yes, Heroin was marketed as a substitute; I fail to see how this indicates that it wasn't used in a recreational manner, or sold by large companies. Laudanum was also used for medicinal purposes.
