Re: "Steal This Comic" Discussion

My biggest complaint about the new "download a song" sales model (DRM or not), is that it has mostly killed off the musical 'concept album'. For those of you too young to remember what these were, a some musicians created entire albums that were tied into a central theme or even had a sto...

Actually, Goto Dengo had a fairly major role in the Cryptonomicon. Major Spoilers follow hereafter, in white. Select the text to make it easily legible. He was on a ship in the Japanese navy as it was sunk, got stranded, lived in the jungle for a while, rejoined the Japanese army, eventually got sl...

Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Earthsea yet. Certainly starts making up her own language there. Also one of my favorite series. I think Earthsea is one of the best examples of why this curve is right. I was given those books. I managed to get through the first one, but it Sucked Royally. I got ab...

Nope. I'm a big SW fan, but this easily ranks as one of the worst comics for me. None of the responses seemed clever or funny. Lame, but can't win 'em all, I guess.

Wasn't the lines being lame the point?

Re: Quantum Teleportation

All of these are possible, with caveats that prevent us exploiting them: - Time travel (only from a mathematical viewpoint) Has this been proven impossible recently? I definitely saw something about it being possible. The writer seemed a bit fuzzy on the details, but it involved two extremely dense...

Pornographic spam PMs; notifying mods

I received said porno spam PM, from the user trideltatip. Title of PM was " LOLcunts - check it out" for reference. Text was a pornographic image and a link (probably to the person's site, definitely an ad).

So far, 229 hits for "I'm glad I saw epic movie"

Quantifying of xkcd's net influence FTW!

Re: Worst/Overrated books.

Overrated? Eragon. I could tell what the characters would do about a chapter beforehand by consulting Star Wars. I didn't even bother with Eldest. Also, Catcher in the Rye. I don't get what's the big deal. On the subject of good stuff ruined by reading it in school, Shakespeare is admired for a reas...

[pointless pedantic] Judaism is actually very small, comparatively. Hindusim, Buddhism, Taoism, etc. pretty much wipes the floor with it. Though Jews can have some pride: they're still beating the Unitarians. [/pointless pedantic] I think more important than WWJU or WWBU is WWMGU? MacGyver's OS of c...

My personal favorite is Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. For reasons unknown to me, perhaps because it feels sort of uncanny. On the subject of parody poems, some chemistry: Distilling by Drops on a Friday Evening What drops these are, I think I know Although they're coming very slow. They do ...
