Re: 1880: "Eclipse Review"

I was lucky enough to be within driving distance of totality, but barely. Drove 5 hours to get there Yo. Detroit to Adairville, KY. About 8 hours down, with my sister who had just herself driven cross-country so I wasn't about to ask her to spend any more time behind the wheel. We drove through the...

Re: 1819: "Sweet 16"

I don't think it was ever established whether "boxers" meant "humans who compete in the sport of boxing" or the breed of dogs somewhere in-between mastiffs and bulldogs known as "boxers".

I'd buy tickets to a game featuring either playing basektball.

Re: 1678: "Recent Searches"

clock speed jumper sample rate This has lots of real-world applications. First, due to the way regulatory agencies measure electromagnetic interference, it's advantageous to actually vary the clock speed within a certain range, which spreads out the interference over more frequencies. It's called &...

Re: 1439: "Rack Unit"

The vertical unit of rack spacing, 1 3/4 inches, happens to already have a name, too: It's an archaic Russian unit called the "vershok", I believe the plural is "vershki".

Re: What-If 0076: "Reading Every Book"

This probably belongs here: http://ch00ftech.com/2014/08/10/gutenberg-clock/ tl;dr: SD card + LED sign + time-based readout, this thing will spit out Project Gutenberg across its face for the next 33 years. If you build your own and start it up, it will run in synch with the original, the same words...

So is this the appropriate forum and thread in which to propose that someone should produce and sell bumper stickers that say:

"IN CASE OF RAPTOR, THIS CAR WILL BE UNMANNED"

?

Re: "Avoidance" Discussion

Somewhat related: I know of at least one totally keyword-crammed resume out on the job boards right now with the Rejection Hotline as the candidate's contact number. I've been thinking of posting my own, with 989-272-rick as the number instead. Because when you call that one, it dumps caller ID data...

I think his middle name will be 8====D

I've noticed that most of my closest matches on OkCupid are librarians. I don't mind this one bit. ;) Seriously, what's not to love? They're generally intelligent, not attention whores, not usually alcoholics, and usually rabid defenders of the bill of rights. I suppose it would help if I actually l...

My tile game is that I draw lines between the odd-colored tiles, and walk only on the normal-colored tiles along those lines. If the tiles have grain but are randomly ordered, I try to stick with one polarization or the other. Sometimes I specifically step in "knight" moves. I try to avoid...

Laptop keyboards don't get so bad. I think it's because the machines are stood on end much more often, and the keyboard crud can shake itself out. Of course, this means that inverting your laptop bag over your face is equally inadvisable. It's all a moot point if your laptop has a washable keyboard,...

Oh man we totally used to do this.

The trick was to find a young cashier. The old ones have seen it all and nothing fazes 'em anymore. Our rules didn't specify "two items" though, we had a price limit. Usually five bucks.

Our best: Rubber gloves, flashlight, Vaseline, laxative.

Goldwave's expression evaluator used to be my favorite way to generate sweep patterns, test filter expressions, etc. For playing with audio, check out the trial version of DSSF3 . You're not allowed to call them 'male' and 'female' anymore, now it has to be 'plug' and 'socket' respectively (and respectably). Which is why Basic Human Decency only leads to ambiguity. The plug is the part with the mechanism, the jack is the part that holds still. The centermost piece determins ...
