12 Angry Men did it right. The '57 version, of course.

Re: "Bag Check" Discussion

It's amazing how paranoid we are about planes when our entire rail system is a sitting duck. well, you know, it would be rather difficult to crash a freight train into the Twin Towers or the Pentagon or the White House. Difficult, but not impossible! Obviously, it would have to be an inside job.

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

Yeah, the author's a hate-mongering bigot Having read Orson Scott Card's editorial news column for several years, I'm kind of confused about where you're getting the idea that he's a "hate-mongering bigot". Sure, he disagrees with people - sometimes vocally - about policies, and sure, he'...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

I was merely seeking insight into what it is that makes the book appealing to people who belong, more or less, to the same subculture as me. Okay! Let me try. It's generic wish fulfillment fantasy for kids who consider themselves much smarter than their peers. So yeah, I'd project something like a ...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

I always did like the idea of the internet as an open forum for the intelligentsia of the era, where political cognoscenti the world over would engage in a level of debate and rhetoric reminiscent of ancient oratory. It's soaringly optimistic to envision that sort of thing emerging from an anonymous...

I feel like Pietro's going to be eaten alive here momentarily so I just want to chime in quietly that I agree with him. I like xkcd itself orders of magnitude more than I like the other xkcd fans I've met. The whole self-congratulatory "I got this reference and laughed about it and I like that ...

Re: "Friends" Discussion

I like Randall when he's harsh. This sort of teenagerism is a pretty easy target, but it's still good.

I notice this old strip made a few people edgy as well, which only confirms that it's on point:

Re: Friends Discussion

xkcd doesn't have to be funny if it's teaching important life lessons (like "Custom ringtones are ridiculous, stop using them"). This falls solidly in that category. Remember, he warns you against this behavior because he cares!

Re: "Scientists" discussion

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/scientists.jpg Title text: A leading expert characterized the situation as 'retarded' I'm a little surprised (albeit pleasantly!) that nobody's ever given Randall any sass over the use of "gay" or "retarded" as derogatory terms in this strip. I think ...

Re: Ultimate Game

THIS COMMENTARY IS PATHETIC. AT LEAST MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE COMIC. NOBODY CARES HOW LONG IT TOOK YOU TO POST IT. GOT THE MESSAGE??? Wow, the mods must be pretty desperate for something to bitch about if they're screaming at everybody who makes a new strip thread. Why don't they...

Re: Discussion: Diet Coke+Mentos

"these web comics are so bad" is a parody blog. I find it pretty funny, although not as funny as the enraged fans who don't get the joke and call him a retard.

Re: "Classic" Discussion

"Classic" implies "old" as well as "good." Newer stuff can't be classic by definition, yet. The idea is that the song/band has "stood the test of time" (in other words: progressively older people, who were young when the music was first popular, continue liste...
