To everyone who's saying this comic disappoints, it's a graph of probability. Every "counterexample" can easily fit on the current graph, since the probability never reaches 0. He's just saying it's unlikely, not impossible.

I don't see how it would just sink towards the mantle, especially when the trench is only 7 feet deep.

If it was deep enough to get under the Earth's crust, then maybe. But given what you said, I highly doubt that anything would happen.
