i have a really nice pair of bose over-ear headphones and i love them, the sound quality is amazing, the sound quality is the same as the top of the line bose but they don't have the noise canceling so they're quite a bit cheeper (i mainly use them at night in my room so my music doesnt wake anyone ...

i had a really good teacher once who adored Guns Germs and Steel, so much so that he had an entire class based almost solely on that one book, i have yet to read it myself but he was incredibly smart and loved it so its probably worth my time to read it
