Re: What-If 0098: "Blood Alcohol"

I wonder if serially diluting blood alcohol down to zero by repeated consumption would produce a homeopathic remedy for hangovers.

The Mismeasure of Man missed some measurements

This article http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pbio.1001071 in the most recent issue of PLOS Biology, reports on a study that investigated Stephen Jay Gould's claims of scientific bias in his book The Mismeasure of Man . It seems the finger-pointer, should have notice...

Re: IKEA Hexadecimal Rug (Conclusion)

I guess that puts an end to that. That shouldn't be the end of it. If that is a Jacquard weaving pattern, then the hex code represents colours. So, it should generate an image. And the blocks of repetition should represent blocks of repeated pattern in the weave. I doubt a loom would use more than ...

Re: Logical fallacies/douchebaggery in commercials.

Sport Clips is an actual thing. :| It's for manly men-people. It's got what men crave. Not like women, like from the toilet. So, does this mean that you can go in there and get a really bad haircut, just like your favourite pro athlete? I can see lines of happy dads and their sons walking out proud...

Re: Logical fallacies/douchebaggery in commercials.

I searched the thread and I don't think anyone has posted this one yet: The other day when I was at the grocery store I noticed a display of laundry detergent. It was "New and Improved, Original Tide". Aside from the logical inconsistency of the labeling, AFAICT they come out with a new fo...

Re: Everything Must GO! One Week until the Rapture!

My understanding is that he actually spent a fuckton advertising the thing. Quite likely! The one billboard I saw, like the one below, said "The bible guarantees it": http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5110/5748036713_acb834ea75.jpg So I think everyone should demand their money back. None of ...

Re: US judge rules IP addresses are not people

Something that might limit some of these lawsuits would be if American judges were in the habit of awarding costs in civil cases. This is believed to be one of the reasons that there are many fewer lawsuits here in Canada: the losing party in a civil suit usually ends up having to pay their opponent...

Re: Majority of Americans support same-sex marriage

Part of the shift may also be due to some softening of attitudes by people who have come to realise that the world has not ended in places where same-sex marriage has been legalised. All of the dire warnings that allowing same-sex marriages would be an end of families, society, etc have not come to ...

Re: Everything Must GO! One Week until the Rapture!

I think that Camping guy got the date wrong. Here in Canada this is a long weekend, and everyone knows that Canadian Jesus (Jesus Murphy) will be at the cottage till Monday, turning water into beer, going fishing with his 12 buddies, riding on his jet ski. It will likely be coming home in the bumper...

Re: Summer project/Tesla coil help?

I'm not sure how helpful this will be to you, but I recall seeing the plans to build a Tesla coil in a magazine when I was in high school ~30 years ago. It may have been Popular Science; I had a subscription at the time. As I recall, most of the materials were relatively easy to get hold of: several...

Re: Favorite home experiments

You can demonstrate thin-film interference with two sheets of flat glass, a piece of cigarette paper and a monochromatic light. We did this in high school using a mercury vapour lamp, but it should work with other light sources. You lay one sheet of glass on the other placing the cigarette paper (do...

Re: Wasilla HS bans Bohemian Rhapsody b/c written by a gay m

Although Probasco wouldn’t comment on the issue Monday, Senior Class Advisor Deb Haynes said Probasco has now agreed to allow the choir to sing an edited version of Bohemian Rhapsody that doesn’t include lyrics in one section about killing a man. Uh so someone complained that the song was written b...

Re: Evidence for Dark Matter

I know what dark matter is! It is fudge! Dark delicious fudge. I am glad the guy in Maryland has the balls to question the whole idea. In most areas of science if a model/hypothesis is falsified by observations, like good little Popperians you abandon it. In physics if your model doesn't fit the obs...

Re: public misconceptions

If any face cream actually had the ability to alter DNA we would see a whole lot of mutant fashion models which would be kind of awesome. If your face cream was full of measles virus, it would definitely insert DNA into your chromosomes. But, alas you would not end up with a smoother complexion, un...

Re: Variation of the dreaded airplane/conveyor belt...

Steady level flight requires the balance of four forces: lift vs gravity, and thrust vs drag. In the scenario outlined in the OP the plane is generating enough lift to counter gravity, and except for the clamps holding the plane the engine is generating thrust; since the plane isn't moving forward t...
