Re: 1472: "Geography"

I was thinking New Zealand... never been there, though; mostly just thinking about LOTR. Any Kiwis here to comment? No mesas, as far as I know. I don't think we have any lagoons either. Oh, and probably no glaciers that close to a desert; I think the glaciers are all in the South Island and the des...

Re: 1472: "Geography"

The house is too far from the river. He won't be able to build a Garden or a Water Mill.

Yeah, it's possible I've been playing too much Civilization recently.

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

WHAT THE WHAAAAA?!?! You've never HEARD of Dark Side of the Moon? Straight up. I'm sorry, but you fail culture. Apparently I do. My wife was able to identify both "Abbey Road" and "Dark Side of the Moon" without any context, so I guess it's just me. I'm lousy at trivial pursuit,...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

By much the same token you could call the back cover outside art; if you're not familiar with how glass bends light, it looks great, if you are, it grates on your nerves like fingernails on a blackboard. (Or perhaps its just me.) I think it's sort of silly to expect scientific correctness from a pi...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

But I'm not surprised that only the first part (from what I've read here) makes it onto the posters. That part is at least kind of pretty. I rather like both. I have to agree that this comic turned out to be something of an outside joke . Ha, good point. By much the same token you could call the ba...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

It is bizarre to see people waving around their ignorance as if it's something to be proud of. "Dark Side of the Moon, eh? What an ugly album cover. And who are these guys, anyway?" Hey, I was just answering Adam's (implied) question. (And if you were following the conversation, you'd hav...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

I guess I just don't think of songs as being inherent parts of an album, but as independent works which just happen to be sold in groups. Albums like Dark Side of the Moon are so much more than the sum of their parts. A lot of bands of that era, and indeed up into the present day, design their albu...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

WHAT THE WHAAAAA?!?! You've never HEARD of Dark Side of the Moon? Straight up. I know the name of a few albums (mainly ones that I own and am particularly fond of) but while I of course know the Beetles (for example) well enough to recognize most of their songs, and perhaps even remember the names,...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

You're NOT suggesting that an album can't possibly be popular just because it's old, right? Popular, sure. Common knowledge, less likely. I'm just saying that DSOTM fans are probably in a minority here - a large minority, quite possibly, but still a minority. (I'd never heard of it, and wouldn't ha...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

Dark Side of the Moon is a hugely popular album; [...] (Thirty-eight years ago ...) For me, it's a severe research failure on Randall's part, [...] I've got to wonder how much research you think a single comic strip justifies. I mean, come on, not every strip has to be funny to everyone. The fact t...

I'm a bit puzzled about the discussion of the back cover. I may be misremembering it, but isn't it just the same as the front cover, but viewed from behind? As if the album were transparent?

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

The DSOTM album cover is wrong, because the spectrum is inverted. But who should care? It add some colour (if you'll forgive the pun) to an otherwise tedious science exercise. Nobody is suggesting that anyone should "care". Randall's joke is essentially pointless and humourless. "Fix...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

[...] a two-person room isn't twice the size of a one-person room, it's less. [...] I'm not sure that this is necessarily true. A one-person room can be very small and still liveable, it seems to me that doubling the space wouldn't be enough to fit in an extra person without tripping over one anoth...

Not significantly cheaper, surely? The only extra costs are an extra wall and an extra door, and that can be amortized over the life of the building.

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

Every time I see a US college dorm on TV I wonder whether people really still share rooms over there. I guess now I have an excuse to ask. (The hall of residence I stayed at as an undergrad did have a few shared rooms, but that was very much the exception rather than the rule.)

...I have just wasted 20 minutes trying to find a counterexample which is not a loop. Do you mean, which does not loop back to the original article? Clearly you always have to end in a loop eventually (as there are only a finite number of articles) so the only question is whether you reach Philosop...

Re: #903: Extended MInd

You're half right. Oral History leads to a loop Not any more. Oral History -> historical -> history -> Greek -> Greeks -> nation -> sovereign state -> state -> social sciences -> etc. Looks like someone recently eliminated the loop by making the word "historical" a link. I suspect this is...
