Re: Wireless Router - Insane Problem

MAC address filtering is not secure. It is trivial to change the MAC address of most, if not all, wireless cards. But you have to know what to change the MAC address to. Whilst some-one determined and reasonable knowledgeable could get through, in reality most people will just find a neighbour with...

Re: On Global Warming

Well, there is the oil that we use when making fertilizers and pesticides... The carbon from which is not consumed by the plant or rendered airborne in any sense, so it has pretty much no bearing on the greenhouse gas aspect. Some of that is in transport and manufacturing, which do. Also, that carb...

But that's another issue, really.

Re: On Global Warming

Also, I note that the Wikipedia entry (Environmental Effects of Nuclear Power is assesed at start class and has its neutrality disputed.

Re: On Global Warming

Unfortunately, nuclear power produces waste which stays dangerous for centuries, and actually puts as much carbon into the atmosphere as coal . [citation needed] My source was video, not easy to refer to. I've done a little (but only a little) more research, and from what I've found, it appears I w...

Re: On Global Warming

I would hazard a guess that there is nothing wrong with planting the trees - the problem lies in using tree planting to justify increasing emmisions. Exactly. And a lot of the time, planting trees is used as an excuse to carry on polluting, when there are more perfect solutions for a lot of things....

Re: On Global Warming

It's not carbon neutrality that's the problem; it's carbon offsetting that's a non-science and doesn't work properly. I assume he means that carbon offset schemes fail to capture the amount of CO2 they say they will in any sort of effective timeframe, in which case he's absolutely right. Tree plant...

Re: On Global Warming

I hate carbon neutrality, but I could never put my finger on why exactly. I think this has something to do with it: this site is really funny in its approach of dealing with it: http://cheatneutral.com/ It's not carbon neutrality that's the problem; it's carbon offsetting that's a non-science and d...

Re: Now THIS Is A Knife.

You left out it's most useful purpose: A projectile weapon for throwing through somebody's window. Usually attached to some kind of angry note like "Stop leaving your dog's shit on my lawn!" But then you've have to go and knock on the door to ask for it back. Kind of takes the symbolism o...

Re: Wireless Security

Well I already pay for my own internet so I'd like to use it at full capacity, and my stolen option isn't the more reliable access, anyway. What I mean is, if some-one's sat outside trying to steal internet, if you have very little/very poor security, it's likely to be enough if your neighbour has ...

Re: Wireless Security

I'm using a Belkin router now, so I'll actually look at the set up page you'll be using. Make sure you change the password: the default is blank. This is under 'System Settings', probably the very last item on the list on left. Other things you could do: The router's set-up up page should have a lis...

Re: Now THIS Is A Knife.

I see a lot a lot of mocking, but this would be very useful to some-one who drinks wine (Corkscrew), works with wires (Adjustable pliers with wire crimper and cutter; Spring-loaded, locking needle-nose pliers with wire cutter), is a Scout (2.5" Blade for Official World Scout Knife), cycles (Bik...

Re: On Global Warming

The house is still on fire - This article from Celsias asks a question I've never seen before: even if climate change is "natural" rather than man-made, it's still a problem, so why are the sceptics still not doing anything?

Re: UK meetups

I may be interested. I'm from Stoke-on-Trent, but London's not to bad to get to given sufficient notice. (Thre weeks in advance, I might be able to travel 1st class for £20 - on the day, standard class starts at £60). Other places in the south tend to be more difficult.

Re: iTunes: mono vs. stereo

If you're using Windows, double-click the speaker icon in the system tray to bring up Volume Control. Move the balance to the side that the speaker works on. This will also help if any other apps play sound in stereo. If you're using a Mac/Linux, I don't know, but try the OS sound settings rather th...
