Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi, I'm Sweeney. That's actually my last name, but it's much better than my first and infinitely times more amazing. I'm not a normal person in the slightest, too.

Re: Confessional Shed - I'll keep a look-out

I'm an incredibly violent and unsympathetic person on the inside. On the outside, I'm a pacifist and an overall pleasant person to be around. Both of those I feel are a genuine personality of mine.

Re: How'd you come up with your username(s)?

I love the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It works twice-over because my last name and nickname is Sweeney.

How Would The World React To a Post-Scarcity Society?

Basically, what the title says. What would happen in a post-scarcity society in which all goods, services, and information was readily available through non-morally objectionable means? Could an economy exist? How would education work, with no one trying to get a new job? Would anyone try to create ...

Re: Cannabis Legalization as a really obvious solution

I don't know about legalization. My dad used to get high, and it really affected me growing up. I think that marijuana and alcohol should be legal, but very restricted.

Re: Parallel Universes

If you assume parallel universes to be true, then what determines why our consciousness occupies this universe? For example, say you face a crossroad, and you turn right. A parallel universe exists in which you turn left the second you turn right. If that universe is exactly the same, save for your ...

Is Music Mathematical or Abstract?

I've been thinking about this question for a while, and I can find evidence for each, I really haven't come to a conclusion. My question is, is music mathematical, following the logical procession between notes; or abstract, being able to materialize the feelings of the author?

Re: Who should have the right to vote?

If you live in a country, and are taxed in some way by the government, then you should have the right to vote. Otherwise, it's taxation without representation.

If human consciousness is just the arrangement of your atoms, then who's to say that an exact clone of oneself wouldn't just be a "hive mind?" 4 year old necro for nothing more than this? Everyone else ought to let this one die again unless they have something incredibly enlightening to ad...

Re: What were your dreams last night?

I had this terrifying dream. It was where I had raw egg on my hands and couldn't wash it off. I (being slightly germaphobic) found this incredibly scary. I also had a dream where we had to do lots of work at school, but I kept insisting that we don't need to do it because it was a dream. No one woul...

I'm reading Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything now. I recommend it to anyone who wants their science explained to them in a not too dumb but not too technical way.

Re: Rant Thread (because we need more ranting)

My pet peeve:

People who say "try and' instead of "try to." It makes no sense when someone says "I'm going to try and blah blah blah..." They're trying to do something, not trying and do something.

Kinda dumb cosmic expansion question

If the universe is curved in such a way that anything at one end is moved to the opposite end, then how can the universe be expanding? Wouldn't space expand in upon itself?
