Re: 1342: "Ancient Stars"

There is even variation within metropolitan areas. For those who lives in the immediate suburbs of New York City, the limiting magnitude might be 4.0. This corresponds to roughly 250 visible stars, or one-tenth the number that can be perceived under perfectly dark skies. From the New York City boro...

Re: What-If 0073: "Lethal Neutrinos"

Wow, my first real GOOMHR moment!! I actually remember thinking about this particular problem about a decade ago and trying to work the physics out myself. But I hadn't seen that Karam paper yet, so I had trouble finding what percentage of neutrinos would actually hit you at specific distances. I kn...

Re: 1249: "Meteor Showers"

Every time I've tried to see a meteor shower, I basically ended up seeing nothing. The only thing I hate about living in this part of the country is the atrocious amount of light pollution. And it is a many many hour drive to get away from it.

Re: 1202: "Girls and Boys"

The rhyme I remember from when I was a kid goes "Girls go to college to get more knowledge. Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider." I guess I'm one of the 10,000 today, because I had absolutely no idea what this comic was referring to, and I have never heard this rhyme or any of its app...

Re: 1148: "Nothing to Offer"

What annoys me most is people offering the xkcd "be nice to people who don't know" comic as a response to someone saying "just fucking Google it!" It is NOT an apt comparison - in the comic, the people are apparently walking on a sidewalk or something. They're certainly not at a...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

It seems to me that the "you have bad taste" comment seems to be more of a comment on the writing than on her philosophy. And I have to say, to say nothing about whether I agree with her philosophy or not, I found Atlas Shrugged to be a terribly written book. The characters are simplistic,...

At my college, on-campus freshmen weren't given parking passes, so in effect, that meant no freshmen had cars. I think the rationale was to prevent drunk driving or something. It sucked.

Re: 0949: "File Transfer"

Really? It's like $3 a month for a domain name and a site on a web server. More like $0. Your box already is on the web. DynDNS + Opera Unite = problem solved. (What do you mean, you switched your computer off while I loaded the file from you that you wanted me to have?? ^^) Yeah, that is exactly t...

Re: 0949: "File Transfer"

Really? It's like $3 a month for a domain name and a site on a web server. You don't even have to know how to make a website at all. My webspace doesn't even have an index.htm. It's just a collection of every file I've ever needed to transfer or link to. Anyone in the world can access any file on it...

Re: 0948 - "AI"

Man, the wikipedia article on Burning Man uses so many words to say absolutely nothing about what it IS. I just spent 20 minutes reading the whole article, and don't know anything more about what it is those people do out in the desert for a week. Why write an encyclopedia article that is completely...

Re: 0910: "Permanence"

This reminds me of when I named my computer. I really should have consulted someone who knew Latin. I named it Machina Ex Deus, which, from what I understand, is just Deus Ex Machina with different emphasis. Anyone know how to say "the Machine from God"? I probably should have just called...
