Re: CSS Standards - If you could add/change/remove a standar
Two things have always bugged me with CSS. Firstly, vertical aligning is very hard. If I have a piece of text, I can't set it to be vertically in the middle of a block without setting a large line-height or displaying my div as a table-cell. Secondly, fieldsets and legends. Legends overlap fieldsets...

Re: JavaScript: do you browser sniff?
I'm so re-assured that my peers don't browser sniff :) This all started when I saw a very cool piece of JavaScript to detect IE. The script's on Github . I was thinking of writing a blog post about why not to do it and what to check instead. I'm glad it's not needed -- thanks for the responses. In r...

JavaScript: do you browser sniff?
Does anyone here detect faulty browsers to correct problems? I've always thought that it was a really unreliable way to fix errors but I can't help but acknowledge its popularity; most major JavaScript libraries have browser sniffing elements. It's made me wonder what people think about the techniqu...

This is going to sound bad, but, what's Loom? Loom was a game for the PC in the early 90s by Lucas Arts. It was mainly a light-hearted adventure game. It stands out as unique because throughout the entire game, it's only possible to pick up one item: a staff right at the beginning. The staff allowe...

Well, I meant that a law that makes it essentially illegal to record the interior of your store is kind of, well, broken. Especially when those recordings can be the only thing to make a case with. The law makes it illegal to have a TV monitor showing the recordings as you're recording them. It sta...

Surely I don't have to explain why it's ridiculous to restrict a store's ability to monitor it's own premises because a potential robber could intentionally flash his information in front of them? Most CCTV cameras are actually privately owned. A show will have a couple dotted around the place so the checkout clerk can keep an eye on people the other side of the shelves. Interestingly, a couple of years ago, it was noticed that around 90% of the recorded images were considered useless for fai...

If someone, however, comes to me bi-monthly telling me they're going to kill themselves, it gets old.
