Re: 1210: "I'm so random"

Jurgen Schmidhuber has proposed a rigorous definition of interestingness in terms of algorithmic information theory. In a nutshell, a piece of information is interesting if it is surprising to us yet makes sens in hindsight. A piece of random data contains a lot of information, but the information i...

Re: 1140: "Calendar of Meaningful Dates"

I'm new to using N-gram, but it looks like September 31st had a big spike in 1893, and November 31st in 1770. I also searched for the 32nd of each month - March and December occasionally have hits, but no other month ever does. Does anybody know why? I only did the search from 2000 onwards, to matc...

Re: 1140: "Calendar of Meaningful Dates"

I did a N-gram search for meaningless dates, the breakdown is as follow

31% June 31st
17% September 31st
16% April 31st
16% November 31st
14% February 30th
6% February 31st

Re: "How It Works" Discussion

Blaaah. A nice piece of sugar coated Basic Human Decency. Please, girls do suck at math, and by that I mean - and I shouldn't even have to explain myself - that on average girls are not as good as math as boys. Now if you imagine two gaussians, one with a lower mean, and consider the ratio of boys /...

Re: "Helping" Discussion

I like this comic, although it's not "funny". Happiness is a purposeful choice, it comes from within. External events don't define happiness, they just make it harder or easier to find - some people can be happy even in the face of tragedy.

Re: So who's voting for the Ronpaul in the primaries?

You don't think that calling MLK day "hate whitey day" might be some indication that his view of MLK is somewhat tainted by an issue of race? Just maybe? Perhaps? Some chance? A slight tendency? An itty bitty correlation? Some relation? This is actually an accusation of racism towards whi...

Re: So who's voting for the Ronpaul in the primaries?

If your contempt for King, Mandela, and people in LA arises from the fact that they are black, then yes, you are a racist. 1) Wow wow I never claim I had any contempt for any people in LA 2) I agree with you, but fortunately, I am a rational person and be sure they don't arise from this. So I'm not...

Re: So who's voting for the Ronpaul in the primaries?

the Ronpaul looks like a nutjob. So? A presidential office is not a brownie point nor a virtue contest. The only question that matters is: how would that affect his policy. I for example would rather like to see a president who believes in flying bananas and world peace than a sane president chosin...

Wow talk about bias. The way that manipulates his views is unbelievable. Just by saying: "the right of women to be free to control their own reproductive systems " you cant tell it's not a serious analysis. I mean I am pro-choice but I understand the pro-life argument. the issue is not wh...

Re: So who's voting for the Ronpaul in the primaries?

Paul has the same exclusionary strike against him as Huckabee does: he doesn't believe in evolution. Past that, I really don't care. It shows that the candidates are unwilling to objectively assess overwhelming evidenciary data in favor of preconceived notions, and that's an absolute bar to my vote...

Re: So who's voting for the Ronpaul in the primaries?

1) One can have a principled opposition to war, regardless of any "evidence". If you point to me "overwhelming evidence" that a bus contains three dangerous murderers, I would not throw a grenade to take them out. War makes innocent victim, I do not believe making innocent victim...

Re: "Fandom" Discussion

What weirds me out though is how commonly some self-described libertarians say stuff like "we should get rid of taxes, period!" I mean, seriously, what's the difference between that kind of stuff and anarchy? How do they expect to have roads that aren't owned by corporations where they ha...

Gaah. Thanks for this comic, I'm so tired of the the Ronpaul fanboys... Even otherwise rational, coherent educated libertarians are falling for this vaguely constitutionalist clown, it's sad. I understand that one may fell he's a relatively good candidate, but this cult of personality is borderline ...

Am I reading too much or is it a subtle criticism of dynamic range compression. (Or is it obvious and I am making a fool of myself by beating a dead horse)
