The past two sessions have been very much a build up for next years big campaign of tracking a band of necromancers hidden in a Scandinavian-style archipelago and, although they have been interestin...

If you are the creator of the world, who is to say that there isn't a good source of pen and paper substitutes? Perhaps they write with ink made from the juices of the abundantly growing Black Weed or using the blue blood of the Frondle beasts who have been successfully tamed long ago. As for paper...

Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

Most of my time nowadays is spent in Pathfinder (with a stint in NWoD, which I'd love to get back to at some point), but I've been fortunate to deal with GMs who approach things this way... they give flexibility to the players and will compensate on their end to deal with any unexpected decisions o...

Blog about a British person moving to Sweden

Being from Sweden I found the blog The Swenglish Life really entertaining. It's full of quirky observations on what it's like to move to the "mythical socialist wonderland" of Sweden and the crazy antics people get up to close to the Arctic Circle. If you want a taster then this "Best...

Re: Factorio - automate ALL the things!

I got this game recently and have been enjoying it a lot, however, I can't seem to make it work in multiplayer, which is a shame because I originally bought it to play it with my brother. There is some trouble concerning the forwarding of gates that I just can't seem to resolve. It is very addictive...

I'm sure a lot of people already know about this, but the good guys and gals at Colossal Order have made a handy little tool for exporting height-maps from the real world. But then again since Civ5, it is not a serious strategy game anymore. Winning no longer requires thought or skill, game balance is missing, and everything is pretty first and functional second. Concerning the staging problem: I tried the new patch and noticed the same thing. I remade several fairly simple rockets of varying complexity that I've built before and the results weren't great. The system had trouble sorting out the most basic 1 parachute + 1 rocket booster set-up and a simple th...

I just watched my son recreate the space shuttle, complete with booster rockets... and due to the excessive weight and some manual control, perform a flip and a delta-v slide a mere 88m above sea level. "Let's see NASA do that! " That sounds like a moment of equal parts awesome and terror...

The logic behind them also bugs me - how can you have your own personal army that you never have to pay except to replenish? Who is supposed to be paying for their food/lodging/equipment/wage? Confider this: The cost of a retinue is 100 gold or so. This is roughly half the cost of building a keep, ...

The only thing I can figure is that there are items that give negative defense to your entire army (like the shield that gives your entire army a -8) that can cause units to die on spawn when the fighting starts. After a bit of thinking I've come to the conclusion that I like it because it makes the enterprise a source of adventure rather than a simulation of what it would be like to run such an enterprise. It cuts micromanagement and affords the group of players more freedom. It doesn't hold you back.
