Re: Canberra, Australia meetup - March 7

How about some time in the afternoon, gives people a chance to sleep in, or in my case work. I can't be at civic before 5:30, so if its later there is a chance people are still hanging around.

Pure brilliance.

my homonums tend to not even be words, as I am allergic to the predictive on my phone. As a result people end up having to go through a list of what I might have meant, it can get quite embarrassing at times

I have some basic german (four years at school), but would like to learn more. I'm also picking up bits and pieces of bastardised Scottish dialect and Gaelic through old songs.

Re: Mnemonics you love

I find it much easier to remember the pattern the sharps/flats make on the lines, and that tells you key easily as well. A lo of the time I use visual patterns to remember things. If I use a mnemonic (don't ever ask me to spell that again, or pronounce it for that matter) I tend to put it into a son...

Re: "Black people love us"

Anyway, "blacks" makes me feel rather uncomfortable, much in the same way that "gays" does. It possibly shouldn't, as it's just describing a group of people based on a single trait, much like saying "males" where folk are referenced by their gender., or "blondes&q...

I get my year 12 results tomorrow. Starting to be a little nervous, was sick the day of the (top level) maths exam so didn't do as well as I would have liked. Catch is i need a national score of 99 for the course (an advanced science course at ANU) I want, but the way my state marks (with scaling) m...

Sometimes, when I'm in a time dilation field, I like to imagine that it's some history monk's fault because he needed to dump some minutes somewhere and left 'em on me. Or he borrowed time from me so he could have more time to dismantle a bomb or something. Makes me feel better when I'm stuck waiti...

Do we have any black forumites, actually? Is it horribly ignorant of me to ask that? Just, I don't think I've seen any, and we have plenty representing the asian end of the spectrum. If I could pick my heritage, I think I'd want to be an asian/caucasian mix...my lineage is so horrifically dull and ...

Re: 10 Year old girl "probably consented" to being pack raped

Sometimes seems to me that the aboriginals of Australia tend to get preferential treatment, mainly because if they get treated the same as everyone else they cry discrimination. I have vivid memories of driving in northern Australia and seeing utes coming towards us traveling at 110 kmh at least wit...

Re: Wayward internet forum decries XKCD championing of nerdgirls

So far XKCD is the best comic I've found, even though I don't get a lot of the jokes yet. It is funny though when you suddenly learn something new in maths and for a moment you think, hey thats from XKCD, that makes sense now. I do the same with the Terry Pratchett Discworld books, I go through life...

Re: 10 Year old girl "probably consented" to being pack raped

I suspect there is a lot more to this case than has been reported. The indigenous communities do seem to have a culture of abuse, sexual and drug. The girl may have been willing and experimenting or she may have been pressured into it, I have heard stories of it being common for sexual favours to be...

I just finished my year 12, and studied maths all the way through. In primary school you get taught certain concepts and rules that are nice and simple, which you can use at that level. Then once you have learned enough other stuff you get taught the next closest thing to whats really happening. Whe...
