Re: Expanded Goals Statement

I asked here because when I asked the admission department their response was vague and unhelpful. I was wondering if anyone had any experience writing one, and had any advice from their experience. Yes, I know every program and school is different, but there are general things that admissions board...

Expanded Goals Statement

So I am filling out my application for grad school and one of the requirements is an "expanded goals statement". Anyone know exactly what this is and what kinds of things I should say in it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: The worst film you've seen

This thread is so long, it has probably been mentioned before...but I rarely see movies...seen very few...and tend to at least enjoy pretty much all that I see (or at least not actively hate). That being said, Cloverfield....I saw it for free, and I still think I paid way way too much with the 2 hou...

Re: What is your favourite book?

This is a very hard question, as it seems to depend on my mood and some books are just very hard to compare to others, so I will list a few: 1984 The Hunger Games Trilogy (just finished last night...dear god, it was amazing) The Kingkiller Chronicles (Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear) -- two VER...

Re: Are there many jobs available in quantum optics?

I am not sure how easy it would be overall to find a job in quantum optics...but I do know, here at the Naval Research Lab where I work...more time is being put into research involving quantum computing etc. Not a LOT, but it is a concept that is tossed around a bit here....that would not fall under...

Re: Renaming a large number of files in linux

Thanks for the help, everyone! I ended up using this:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

for files in `/bin/ls -1 2d*fts`
do
newnm=`echo $files | sed 's/2d/25d/'`
mv $files $newnm
done

Re: Renaming a large number of files in linux

There are many ways to do that. Here's one i like for bash: for i in *; do mv "$i" "${i:0:1}5${i:1}"; done It inserts a 5 in the second position in each filename in the current directory. To run it: open a terminal, cd to the directory with the files, run the command. This won't...

Definitely healed well, I would not have even noticed the scar had I not looked at the pic of the injury to figure out where it was.

Renaming a large number of files in linux

I am still quite new the linux environment, and someone told me I need to use a script to rename a massive amount of files, but I have never done this. (Never even used shell scripts). What I need to happen is a need files that are named like this: 2d_orcl_110430.fts to be renamed to: 25d_orcl_11043...

IDL 8.0 book?

So I just started using IDL 8.0 at work, and it has a LOT of new functions (like being able to make that plot object etc), and I was wondering if anyone here knows of a good mid-level book on IDL 8.0. I am working on learning IDL still (tho have a pretty good knowledge), from books on version 6 and ...

Re: Taking physics in college without high school physics?

I majored in physics having never taken a physics class in HS....and it was fine. My teacher kinda expected us to recognize stuff, but not to know it: "You have probably seen this before but...". Your background in calculus will help a TON more than any physics class would have anyway. Goo...
