Re: Book care

Mine are mostly in rough shape from the start since I buy books used, but I try not to make them worse. I use bits of scrap paper for bookmarks, and store them on a proper shelf when they are not in use. They don't get too grimy from my hands because a few years spent working in the microbiology lab...

Re: Interesting but flawed games

P.N.03 It had an interesting twist on third-person shooters. The point wasn't to simply kill everything in sight en route to the end boss, but rather to chain shooting and dodging (especially dodging, since Vanessa Z. Schneider was animated like a modern dancer) so that each room was cleared in the...

Re: Need advice: potty-mouth FPSers

Thank you for all your replies. I decided to leave the group. I sent my ex-boss a short note in which I thanked her for the invite to the clan, and said that it was time for me to move along, and expressed the hope that they prosper (just without me). Another member of the clan noticed that I was le...

Need advice: potty-mouth FPSers

Hi all! I need some advice, please. In a popular third-person shooter I've joined with a pretty decent clan which was started by a very experienced player to help newer players learn the ropes of this particular game. The problem is, the leader of the clan (and nobody else in the clan) says "fa...

Re: You are the last person left on earth. What do you do?

It's early November in the center of North America. Priority #1 is filling a van with survival supplies and driving to a warmer place that is reasonably free from catastrophes. I'll have plenty of time to formulate medium- and long-term plans while I'm on the road south. I am not wintering here. It ...

My awesome mother-in-law lent us Live Free or Die Hard , thus ending her run of perfection and awesomeness. A mere minute into the film, I could not hold back and had to shout "computers do not work that way!" at the television. Five minutes later, I was shouting "NOTHING works that w...

Re: The worst film you've seen

Well, what went wrong for me was the overuse of that "Boring Invincible Hero" trope. The three angels are just too perfect and wins every time, there was hardly any suspense for me towards the characters. So instead of being all excited in the action (like I usually am in other action mov...

I pick my battles. If it's my corp-mates in EVE Online, hell yes I call them out on it. If it's a squeaky-voiced boy playing Team Fortress 2, I just mute them and move on.

Moderators are dicks because they have to be, sometimes. I'm a modmin (weird hybrid) on another forum, and I've learned that absolutely anything I do will anger someone , including doing nothing at all. So, I may as well do what I think is best. Sometimes this means showing someone the door, but tha...

STOP! Hammertime. Original score? Perhaps in the context of the story. To anyone who knows Horner, the score was basically every melody and cue from every other Horner score. The man plagiarises the hell out of himself so much, I think he's only ever done 30 minutes of original composing and then g...

Re: eBay Sniping: Why does it even exist?

Sniping hides my presence from other bidders, which lowers the perceived demand for the item and can result in a lower final price. On a personal level, I derive deep satisfaction from imagining the look on the face of a low-baller who bids only the minimum allowed, watches the auction for a week an...

At least that's the hope. Don't worry, it really works. Here's an example: Random strangers approach me in public and ask me if I play basketball. I'm 6'3" tall, which is WNBA territory for a woman but unremarkably tall for a man. Nobody asked me if I was a 'baller when I looked like a man, on...

I was raised Southern Baptist.* Around the age of 14 I stopped attending church, not out of a crisis of faith, but because I caught the youth pastor in an outrageous lie. Besides which, he was a pompous douchebag. For about 16 years after that I declared myself to be a generic Protestant and attende...
