Re: "11th Grade" Discussion

I'm the strange guy that you didn't want to talk to in homeroom. Fortunately, I wasn't dumb enough to take a gun to school. When I read the alt-text, I immediately saw it as a refference to school shootings (aka Collumbine). But then, the Collumbine shootings happened when I was in 11th grade, and ...

Re: "Every Damn Morning" Discussion

I respectfully beg to differ on the cursor-text -- isn't that a direct reference to Silver on the Tree, the last volume in the Dark is Rising Sequence? I know the Narnia and Dark is Rising books rather thoroughly, and I suppose I could be confused, but it is much more Dark is Rising, I think. No no...

Re: Writers you love for writing

I really like the way C. S. Lewis' prose goes along. I like the way he introduces concepts and ideas, whether it is his own philosophies, nonfiction, personal experiences, or ficticious plot points. He comes across as very kind on the page, even when the subject is harsh. Tolkein's fiction prose, pa...

Re: sets, trilogies, series of books that dont get worse

Someone meantioned the White Mountains Trilogy by John Christopher ealier in this thread. They definately get better and better, but the story is continuous enough (for books 1,2,3, I haven't read the prequel) that it's kinda frustrating to not read all three in close succession. I would also like t...

Re: Earth - Moon Orbit thingie

I bet there is already technology out there somwhere about how to build an orrey. Have you looked for previously developed technology? Are you just trying to build an orrey or are you trying to make a new and better one that more exactly mimics the moon's movements around the earth? I recommend look...

Re: Books that influenced you as a child

Z for Zachariah was missing the last like forty pages in my library, I was angry. WHat!? I hope you figured that out before you got to the end. "Read, read.... OMGWTF that's it??? Where's the end?" My first book with blatent sexual scenes was -alas- a trashy romance novel left in the bath...

Re: Books that influenced you as a child

I read The Giver when I was 10 or so. The whole idea of a controlled (post appocalyptic/dystopian/futuristic) society was quite the horrid facination for me. I've never taken blue sky and the choice of what to wear in the morning for granted since. I found a whole genre of this type of litterature i...

Re: Book you are proudest to have finished...

I recently read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Awesome book. Like Gone with the Wind, it's really a romance, but P&P gets meantioned alot as a great classic book. I never would have enjoyed it in HS, but at 26 I really enjoyed reading a 17 century romantic comedy, and I'm proud, not so much...

Re: Lab Life: The Scientist's Coffee Corner

I'm an undergrad working in a Comparative Psychology lab studying bubble nesting in Betta Splendens. Right now I am writing python extensions for the GIMP to measure the density/area of their bubble nests. One of the other students in the lab is going to start an endocrine disruption experiment thi...

Re:

It took me 5 years to get through The Fellowship of the Ring only cause I'd get bored and put it down to pick up later. It took me a long time to get into Fellowship as well. The first 50-100 pages take you no farther in the plot than Bilbo's elleventy-first b-day party and are completely packe...

Re: uh, thats jacked up (disturbing books)

I had to read the book Paris Trout[/u] by Pete Dexter for a class in undergrad. That book doesn't have all the gore meantioned above, but I found it deeply disturbing, and I would say, traumatizing. It made me cry and gave me nightmares.
