Re: How long can we (human society) survive global warming?

Should a long term goal be to "uplift" as many possible other species to insure some intelligent life has a chance at survival?

Re: How long can we (human society) survive global warming?

From your Wikipedia link: "In about 1.1 billion years, the solar luminosity will be 10% higher than at present. This will cause the atmosphere to become a "moist greenhouse", resulting in a runaway evaporation of the oceans." And extrapolating from other info, by that point a day...

Re: How long can we (human society) survive global warming?

True. It's total trivia, just fun to imagine a theoretically long hot summer day a billion years in the future. Plus a friend and I were just arguing about the accuracies of such long term predictions. Even ones that require mainly classical mechanics.

Re: How long can we (human society) survive global warming?

Possibly off topic, but how long before the decreasing rotation of the Earth begins to affect our climate? How accurately can we predict, say, what the length of a day on Earth will be when we get to the point where the expanding Sun really starts to make for a 'Long Hot Summer'?

Re: What-If 0086: "Far-Traveling Objects"

It does seem incoherent to ask for a precise date or person at this stage, doesn't it? The whole arc is what I find interesting; how one minute we seem to be zeroing in on a simple intuitive answer, then on second thought we have to admit that we can't give a precise answer, but still feel we have a...

Re: What-If 0086: "Far-Traveling Objects"

Spoiler:
OK, that's a valid distinction, but to my point we are far from being able to pin down this "first person" answer. Is there any possible definition we could use for either person or human that would allow consensus on even a thousand year window?

Re: What-If 0086: "Far-Traveling Objects"

Unless we descend into a definitional debate about proto -humans being people too. Wait, does complete conscious awareness count in defining what a person is? That might simplify things. Unles s people in the future decide that people of our millennium were not consciously aware enough to even coun...

Re: What-If 0086: "Far-Traveling Objects"

The photons from the first man-made fire are the man-made objects that have traveled farthest from the earth. Even if you count photons as "objects" and not waves, the first man-made ones weren't from fire. Humans, like everything else, radiate photons. The infrared photons that were radi...

1. God is dead. 2. Natural Law is a thing. You should eat, lest you die. You should procreate, lest your genetic lineage die. You should compete and/or cooperate (depending on the circumstance) to maximize your chances of living long enough to procreate. 3. Society sucks, but is not dead. So you may...

First time ever this week. I saw a "hole" that my brain filled in, and only from context could I tell something was missing, i.e. I knew the car I was following must have two rear tires instead of only a left rear tire. Then lots of stuff on the right side started disappearing, though the ...
