Re: 0954: "Chin-Up Bar"

Isn't this comic funny (for those of us who aren't sociopaths) because this is something we're not likely to do? We entertain ourselves with an idea that crosses the boundaries of what is acceptable in our own eyes. That said, I have actually pondered this a similar scenario while riding up a long e...

Re: Undergraduate Applications: Making a "Short List"

If you have the time and money, it helps to check the school out in person. You could love the school's academics, reputation, and professors, but the place just might not jive with you. Can you live with that? Depends on the student, but this is a step worth taking. Similarly, you might discover a ...

Re: Writing Intern Letters of Recommendation

How much have told the interns about their job performance and your opinion of them? This. I've learned that even though certain mistakes made by interns seem egregious, it's not obvious in their eyes, even if they are smart. Smart and clever does not equal wise. Now, if an individual such as inter...

I hate the word facetious. I am not being facetious when I say this.

Re: Think Before Naming Your Child

This is a huge problem with Chinese names, because the language contains a lot of homonyms. I think parents just never bothered to really say the names out loud... I've heard of and encountered names that (in Chinese) sound like "Pig Language", "Long Middle Finger", "Not Mar...

Re: Gizmodo Girl Writes Scathing "Magic" Article

Hilarious. The moment she mentioned Jon and M:TG champ, I already had the name "Finkel" pinned down. I am doomed to die alone.

I wonder if her reaction would have been different if she asked how much money he's made from winning tournaments.

Re: Grammatical errors you think should be acceptable

Him is used for predicate nouns, not accusative nouns. But America is sloppy with its English grammar if its intuitive that we don't actually realize there is a difference between predicate and accusative, or most people who haven't taken another language don't know what an accusative is. This is t...

Re: More Practising Christians in China than in Europe

Someone in my family occasionally travels to China to teach seminary classes. He says that Christianity is flourishing in urban areas of China in spite of government efforts to stop it. The acceptance of Christians is also rising in China, evident in the fact that even local police are tired of clam...

Re: Reactions to your Major

During undergrad, as a Psychology major, I'd get asked to psychoanalyze people or diagnose stuff as if having a Bachelor's could allow me to do that. That, or people would just give me a look as if I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. They were right. Funny thing is that now as a graduate...
