Re: "Can't Sleep" Discussion

Basically, if you add one to the highest possible number you can hold (32767 in a signed 16-bit integer), you'll overflow to the lowest possible number (-32768 in a signed 16-bit integer). The alt-text stresses the importance of using a 32-bit integer instead, which would stick the upper limit up i...

 it's not a matter of remembering - it's a matter of only going to one website to do all my morning stuff. all Einstein's clothes were the same so he wouldn't have to decide what to wear, as he considered it a waste of thought. we all have different priorities.

Re: Help With Physics

for #12, I got 52, which sounds big V_{yf}=V_{yi}t-\frac{1}{2}gt^{2} to solve for t (we don't want the negative time here, so solving the quadratic I got 3.21 seconds) then I used t in the range equation to solve for the distance traveled in the x-direction. try it that way and see if I made a mista...

You could use her equation for each direction and then square and add and take the square root, that's a more efficient way than the way I suggested. Truth is, I'm in the 400-level of college physics, I'm rusty on this stuff, haven't done it in a long time. But you don't need the parabola.

You have the initial velocity and the angle, and the height of the cliff.

Which equation can you plug those into and get only one unknown?

I got a larger answer.

I figured out the x- and y-components of the velocity

then I used [imath]y=v_{o,y}*t+0.5*a_{y}*t^{2}[/imath] to get the time

and then used the range equation.

What did you do?

It's been a number of years since I took that level of physics and wasn't able to confirm the range equation you gave in any textbooks I had, it looks right, and if you got 19.88 for the first part then the remaining should be 18.13. Re: Help With Physics

ok so, correct me if i'm wrong, but the the new initial velocity is the negative of the original initial velocity, and the distance it has already traveled is the range (we call it R_{x} ), which i can find be using the equation R_{x}=\frac{V^{2}sin2\theta}{g} , correct? Re: Help With Physics

Your reasoning was right for #4. So then, for #9, you have a new initial velocity in both x- and y-directions, and you know the distance the ball has already traveled (or you can get it from what you have done already) => (=> means therefore) you can solve for the distance it still needs to go => yo...

For #4, when you use that equation, did you divide it up into x- and y-components? For #9, do you know what the velocity is in the x-direction and in the y-direction when the ball has returned to hand-height? (to that aqua blue dashed line?) For #12, hold off until you have done #9, some of the reas...

And I may be wrong, but I don't think that the ICC has ever stepped in where a country had already had trials for those accused of war crimes.
