Re: 1980: "Turkish Delight"

Don't forget the song about the stuff (Rahadlakum) from the musical and movie Kismet. I remember it as the stupidest song I've ever heard!

Re: 1825: "7 Eleven"

Really, the only honest 24-hour stores are the ones in places like Arizona and Hawaii (sic), and many of them are still wrong in certain years Why Arizona and Hawaii? I am missing something about the alt text. DST. DST stands for Daylight Standard Time? Those two states don't change between Dayligh...

Re: What-If 0152: "Flood Death Valley"

As JGH says, flooding the Dead Sea would be a lot more practical (except politically). And, as Willy Ley said in about 1954, piping water into the Dead Sea or Qattara Depression could be used to generate huge amounts of energy. Willy wasn't just about cool torus shaped space stations! https://www.am...

Re: 0878: "Model Rail"

So, who has a neat train layout in their town, that would even be worth making a model of? Except for a few parks with kiddie train in them, I've never lived anywhere (including near train yards) where the train doesn't come in at one edge, and leave at another.

Re: "Pep Rally" Discussion

The dream I've had I am most proud about was during my high school years (at Las Vegas High), in which I attempted to stop a human sacrifice to the School Spirit. But now that I'm a high school teacher at a school for the severely handicapped, it's interesting to notice what a strong archetype the C...

How 'bout space mirrors?: http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2009/02/28/Mirrors_tested_as_global_warming_block/UPI-72671235799499/ The above idea looks pretty wacky to me--but it's the evidence, not the emotions, right? There was another proposal a few months back to install giant venetian blind style ...

Re: "Space Elevators" Discussion

Laser (or other beam) propulsion might be a nice way to launch stuff too. Bot at least space elevators could help raise satellites from low Earth orbit to geosynchronous orbit, and beyond. It would certainly be a much cheaper way to start than going all the way to the ground.

This discussion reminds me of one of the biggest regrets of my life. I was a grad student in clinical psych working in a state institution for the criminally insane in the South. Residents were either people who had been judged "not guilty by reason of insanity" or "Not competant to s...

Obviously, your science is not botany. Coconuts are nuts--not fruits. Or, at least the edible part of them as purchased in a grocery store.
