Re: What instrument do you own?

Three trumpets: Schilke B1 (my baby) Bach Strad (good horn, but it's seen better days) Olds Ambassador One cornet (can't identify the brand--it's pretty old, though) Two flutes: Muramatsu EX model Yamaha One piccolo (Emerson) Four guitars: Fender Strat Acoustic (can't remember the brand--my mom gave...

Re: Brass Players

Trumpet player here. I marched in high school and in undergrad and now I'm in the symphonic band at my grad school. This is my 14th year playing, so I really should be better than I am.

Re: Let's have a South-East [United States] meet-up!

Hey guys, I'm new here, but you seem like a decent group of people so I hope I can put in my 2 cents. I'm in VA, so I'd be interested in one of these meetups if it's regional. Since somebody has to do it, how about we meet in Charlotte, NC, on Saturday March 22 in the afternoon? Since I know nothing...

Re: The Xkcd Superelite Marching Band/Drum Corps

I marched 5 years of high school marching band (they allowed 8th graders to march--we were a small school and needed everyone we could get). In college I marched an additional 5 years in the Florida State Marching Chiefs. Chiefs was the exact opposite of my high school band. In high school we marche...

Re: "Keeping Time" Discussion

... and ultimately, the crowd probably wouldn't care in the slightest, so why bother? Crowds like sticks being tossed around and fancy maneuvers and dance steps and a bit of shouting and cheerleaders (if at all possible), not musical complications like non-standard harmonies and metric complication...

Re: "Keeping Time" Discussion

What do band kids do to stuff that is in 5/4? That should be enough to break their hearts if not their legs. Funny you mention this. When I was at FSU, we marched a piece that alternated between 4/4, 3/4, and 9/8 time. Yes, 9/8. We pulled this off by stepping with the left foot on beats 1-3, then a...

Re: "Keeping Time" Discussion

I registered specifically because of this comic. Looks like I'm going to get sucked into the fora now. At any rate, I used to be in marching band for several years and find that this comic is so true! I walk in step to songs without even realizing it! I probably look goofy when jogging, too, because...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

New here. I'm Nick. 25/m/VA. I'm a grad student in Structural Engineering at Virginia Tech and went to Florida State for undergrad. Besides school, I'm into motorcycles, playing trumpet and guitar, and being outside (specifically I enjoy mountain biking and SCUBA diving). Feel free to PM me. To para...
