First off your right about the variable thing... I guess... He was using local variables like field variables because everything happeneds around main. Second this isn't even close to breaking the no homework rule. He wrote all the code, he just needed a little help... and a lot of help with syntax....

Why couldn't you just have the ball update only when you receive updates from the other player. Have both players send updates even when the paddle isn't moved. Should keep the game synchronized. amirite?

Avoid CD burning... I'm just obsessively lazy, I have a thumb drive I could boot it from too.

Look up scanner in the java API Its a very simple "scanner"(Idk what else to call it. Thats what the api calls it) that can read/parse IO and strings and such. Very cool. It's what we used in my class.
