Re: 1043: “Ablogalypse”

I'd like to request a stick figure perpetually following down an escalator to commemorate tumbler-day (the day tumbler supplants blog).

Re: 1041: "Whites of Their Eyes"

I'm not sure which bothers me more those that need to dehumanize their enemy to kill them or those that don't.

This is dangerously close to having a plot.

Re: 0989: "Cryogenics"

If all the people with dreams of the future skip ahead when they get there they are still the people with dreams. The people left behind are the kind satisfied with things as they are or longing for what once was. In that case how much progress do you think will be made? Interesting... if we were t...

Re: 0989: "Cryogenics"

Of course, once you've frozen yourself, what do the future people gain from waking you up? They have no emotional attachment to you unless you were somebody famous or they are your personal descendants, and as far as money goes they could just get you declared dead and take your assets. Unless they...

Re: 0989: "Cryogenics"

Is this really a tragedy of the commons though? ... As more and more scientists decide to freeze themselves, supply would drop, and you would see the wage of scientists rise to accomodate the falling supply until you hit a new equilibrium where the marginal scientist was indifferent between cryogen...

Re: 0989: "Cryogenics"

I thought about this scenario and time travel before. All the doc browns keep skipping to the future to get cool tech that never gets made because time travel is easier than stopping aging etc. The end result being an group of time travelers preventing the discovery of time travel to force the creat...

Re: 0989: "Cryogenics"

This is pretty much what happened to the space empire in Orson Scott Card's novel + story collection The Worthing Saga ... the more important and successful you were, the more time you got to spend in cryogenic stasis, so all the people who were the best at doing things effectively disappeared from...

I don't think this quite fits tragedy of the commons. It's more like let someone else do it. So no one makes happen what every one is waiting for.

I'm not sure if I've heard it put into a catchy phrase yet.

Cease the day!

Re: 0984: "Space Launch System"

Clearly all creators are responsible for the use of their invention.

Out of curiosity do we know who invented the ships that sailed to the new world? He's got some explaining to do.

Re: 0435: "Purity"

Given fields are human constructs and purity is a human construct. I would say there are two ways to think of purity. Real and Truth. Physics is closest to whats real. Math and probably even more so philosophy and logic are closer to abstract truth. I think of math as a descriptive language that has...
