Re: "Creepy" Discussion

Wow, do you really think that far ahead? If you're still considering talking to a complete stranger, it seems like there are way too many possibly outcomes to take that risk into account in any meaningful sense (i.e. usually there's no way to know what the chance of it is, and any guess of how prob...

Re: "Creepy" Discussion

Wait, are you attacking the comic or the response? I'm contesting the claim by haliblix that Randall's intent in posting this comic was to "get us out of being reclusive, not pander to it," and I used the response in this thread to demonstrate that. In fact, most seem to have taken it as ...

Re: "Creepy" Discussion

I don't understand this line of thinking at all...one only becomes friends with a girl if there's the possibility of sex. Anything else is just a waste of energy. Actually the line of thinking is the exact opposite of that--it's easier to become friends when there's no possibility of sex. Interpers...

Re: "Psychic" Discussion

Given ... a 1:25 chance of guessing the correct movie at the cinema It's a lot easier than that to guess what movie people want to see, even complete strangers. I'm a projectionist, so I can tell you how it works. First, 25 is a lot of different movies for a theater to be showing, unless you're at ...

Re: "Macgyver Gets Lazy" Discussion

I feel so old. I showed this comic to my nephew (who is 15) and he replied "Who is Macgyver?" :'( so sad. My roommate works in a school, and reports that very few of the students have ever heard of MacGyver. I work at a movie theater, and even the youngest employees are at least familiar ...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi, I'm Andy, 28, from Ohio. I'm the CIO of a web startup that hasn't launched yet (and therefore has no revenue with which to pay me a salary :( ) and a film projectionist to pay the bills. What I do for the startup is basically computational graph theory (my degree is in math), and what I do as a ...

Re: "Travelling Salesman Problem" Discussion

The problem I have with rocketsocks (admittedly academically 100% correct) explanation is that, IMHO, O(2^n) is very deterministic - it's deterministically time-consuming. As such, I tend to think of NP as meaning Non-polynomial aka Exponential. Registered to post and clear this up. "Nondeterm...
