Instead of playing around with partitioning, you could just give Wubi a go instead. It installs a virtual drive into your windows partition and boots out of that (or something nifty along those lines). Yes... a live CD is a bootable CD (ie, you download the image, burn it to a CD, leave it in your computer and reboot, suddenly you're in linux), but the difference between a live CD and a traditional CD is that you don't need to install it - it'll just run straight from the CD, and leave your Windo...

From the info I have looked at, it seems to be the most popular, but Slackware, SuSE, Mandriva, and Lycoris seem to be very new-user friendly as well, especially in transition from Windows...

Here's a few . And I second the recommendation to get the Ubuntu livecd and run that. And experiment! Just don't be put off by the fact that it runs really slowly... that's the main disadvantage of a LiveCD, everything has to be decompressed off the CD as you run it, which can slow it down a lot.
