Re: 1399: "Chaos"

I still don't get that nonsense about black shirts being cooler than white, and I've studied quantum physics. Well, as long as you're warmer than your surroundings, higher emissivity of the shirt should make it cooler, right? And since the types of people to wear all black typically only come out a...

Re: ArmA2/DayZ—sandbox zombie apocalypse survival

Ditto on more endgame being needed. I played with a large group of friends, which makes the game much easier. Once we all had decent weapons, plenty of medical supplies, and a couple of trucks, there was nothing left to do.

Re: Suggestions for those trying to get in shape?

I think this has been mentioned already, but how much water do you drink in an average day? Since I started working out, I've been keeping a glass of water on my desk at all times. At home and at work. I also try to limit myself to one cup of coffee a day, as caffeine is a diuretic. I don't get near...

Re: Summer Mile Time Reduction Challenge!

The last mile I ran was something like 8:34, which included a ~100m stint of walking toward the end. That was some time in the spring, after a long hiatus from any kind of regular exercise. I've been doing crossfit since then, which doesn't usually involve running more than 400m at a time, but I kno...

Re: Fifty Shades of Grey

Someone brought this book to my friend's 4th of July barbecue. After enough beers, we started dramatically reading selected passages. Hilarity ensued.

Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality

I wouldn't say it's dull just because it's obvious. Besides, even if you know who the mysterious figure is, it's still useful characterization. The exciting part to me (and probably most people) will be what the protagonist decides to do about it when he finds out.

Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality

Honestly, I wrote "8 days old" because MoR-verse often seems to run on EY's cultural assumptions (he's really bad at anthropology sometimes) "Hm, what non-English language should McGonagall know? I know, Hebrew!" "Not, uh, Scots? Or even Gaelic?" And, of course, Japane...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi. I'm Frank. I'm a 26/Male/Hetero/AgnosticLibertarianTechnophile from Houston. I'm an engineer by formal education and practice, and an amateur student of anything else that seems interesting at the time. Been reading XKCD since... I have no idea. Probably sometime early in college, 2005ish? Creat...

Re: Pushups

If you want to focus more on strength building than endurance, you can also add weight to your body while doing pushups. At the gym, people will typically put barbell plates on their backs, but if you're doing it at home, you'll have to get a little creative.

Re: FE Exam

I would highly recommend not only studying practice questions, but familiarizing yourself with the supplied reference handbook. I don't know if this was intentional, but the reference handbook's index is pretty convoluted. If you have no idea what information is in there, it might take valuable time...

Re: "Convincing pickup line" Discussion

When I saw the alt text for this comic, I immediately wondered if it might actually be an author-inserted statement of truth rather than a reference to either of the two characters in the comic. To test the possibilities of this theory, I did some research. First I did what engineers do best and mad...
