Re: 1089:"Internal Monologue"

"I really enjoyed it" is an objective statement about your subjective experience of it. It puts you on safe ground - about the only way someone could successfully challenge you on it is if you've previously said that you didn't enjoy it. "it was good" is a statement about its ob...

Re: 1078: "Knights"

I had a LOT of Shakespeare in High School English. A lot. I think I had read everything except King Lear before college. You read Two Gentlemen of Verona and King John , but not Lear ? *dies* Two Gentlemen, yes. Remember the teacher talking about how a lot of people have a low opinion of it but he ...

Re: 1078: "Knights"

I don't know. I mean, I can understand not being familiar with the entirety of Henry V , but the St. Crispin's day speech is one of the most famous bits of English-language literature ever written. I still say it's a terrible shame that so many people here are apparently unfamiliar with it and the ...

Re: 1078: "Knights"

I am saddened by the fact that so many people in this thread are apparently unfamiliar with Henry V . Henry V is rarely taught in High School English in the US, so unless you are particularly inclined to study Shakespeare or watch Kenneth Branagh films, it's likely to escape your attention. I had a...

Re: 1063: "Kill Hitler"

That wasn't a time machine. Never was. If it had been, BHG would have written himself a letter listing companies for his younger self to invest in, and would have become the richest guy on Earth! That doesn't seem like BHG to me... I agree he would make a list of companies to invest in. But he woul...

Re: TSA Somehow Getting Worse

I often carry the most dangerous object to the TSA onboard an airplane: a baby. I have been stopped 100% of the time and subjected to extra scrutiny (including the extra special patdown) due to the exceptions needed to fly with infants. So I would argue that families with infants/toddlers ARE ALREAD...

Re: 1046: "Skynet"

(Note: I'm not saying that I do or do not condone such specifications; I'm just wondering how the AI would solve the logical conflict created by instructions that didn't initially conflict, but ended up conflicting. Of course, if the third law were in place as an instruction, it would likely preven...

Re: 1046: Skynet

Worst disguise for a Terminator ever. A Skynet T-shirt? That's got to be a giveaway. I'm just waiting for a Terminator / Dr. Who crossover, as they both seem to work on the timey-wimey ball method of time travel. If it's a dead give away, then a Terminator would surely never wear it, but if you ass...

Re: In other news... (humorous news items, etc)

TL;DR: A physics teacher from UCSD got a $400 fine for not stopping at a stop sign, and wrote a 4 page paper to get out of paying it, with such scientifically brilliant phrases as: A couple of things: a) he drives a Yaris. He deserved the ticket if for nothing else than succumbing to the stereotypi...

Re: North Korean rocket launch (womp womp)

Paint me highly sceptical about the idea of western intelligence analysts who have access to "classified imagery sources" not trolling the NK missile folks by telling them a complete lie. Certainly possible... but it seems like they should've picked something to blame that required NK to ...

Re: North Korean rocket launch (womp womp)

In other news, "classified imagery sources" lead analysts to believe the cause of the crash was the structural collapse of the third stage due to aerodynamic loading: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/hyperbola/2012/04/north-koreas-uhna-3-launch-fai.html I STRIKE AGAIN! Truth be told, I'm...

Re: Reproductive rights in Europe

France and Italy forbid single women and lesbian couples from using artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, or IVF, to conceive. I'm not sure of the veracity of a number of those statements. My French sister-in-law, single depending on how you define it, had a number of fertility treatm...
