I think that Java is a better language than VB, especially for large project, but VB is very easy to learn.
with VB GUI, events are children's games.

I think that the language isn't so important, some language are more verbose, maybe more difficult but algorithms, design, architecture are more important than the language in which they are written, learning C++, C# or Java is an easy task compared to learning how to write good software ...

i've also tried eclipse CDT with mingw,it works very well i like it's autocompletion :)
devcpp is a basic IDE that hasn't been updated for a long time, http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html but it's very simple to use.

Code Bocks http://www.codeblocks.org is a full feathered free IDE for C and C++ (and the D language) it includes gcc compiler and GDB debugger,
if you have another compiler like msvc or digital mars it automatically detect them :mrgreen:
