Re: 1276: "Angular Size"

So did it means that an E. Colli could "see" a solar eclipse if one of the voyagers were passing in front of the Sun? If one of the voyagers were between the Sun and the Earth, and if they casted a strong shadow, and if the E. Colli could actually "see" something...? 1) If voyag...

Re: 1204: "Detail"

Why Planck lengths? I'm assuming the resolution refers to screen resolution, am I wrong? It's not screen resolution. It's the resolution of the data which google has [ie: what is the smallest detail you can make out in their images? How big are their "pixels" in real space?]. You start fr...

Re: 1193: Externalities

Has anyone wondered if Randall hacked in a webserver to find a skein hashed password of someone (that maybe he dislikes) and made us fight to crack it??? Maybe Randall waits for us to give him the original string, himself having no clue about it... Or he, himself, is in a competition to crack a has...

The point is, we don't know what might have been around 4.5 billion years ago, because all of the evidence was destroyed by subduction. There might have been life of some form, there might have been bizarre fascinating geological formations, there might have been time travellers who drastically ove...

Re: 1193: Externalities

. . . Although if you are going to count the bits in the xor of 1024 bits you won't get much faster than looping through the 128 bytes, for each byte do a table lookup into a 256 byte table containing the number of one bits in that byte, and bailing out early if the total exceeds the target that yo...

Re: 1193: Externalities

In theory, if I take the unary [bitwise inverse] of the input, I would get a low bit difference. No that would not work. Since Skein is a cryptographically strong hash it is designed so that knowing one input and its corresponding hash will predict absolutely nothing about any other input/hash pair...

Re: 1193: Externalities

I managed to grab 397 for purdue.edu with some C code and liberal use of ampersands and SSH'ing into the school's unused computers. Like hell was I going to let our rivals iu.edu (398) beat us. I maxed out at ~218 GHz generating 103,097,880 hash's per second. My code managed 472,759 Hashes/Gigaflop...

Re: 1193: Externalities

But in this instance, just obtaining the lowest bit difference, a random [or incremental] input will work best. You do know that you can only submit the guess through a web form which will urlencode the input, and you know that you will have only so much time to hash guesses. That means that you ca...
