Re: Google Codejam

I'm probably missing something too. Haha. I used Perl. It's the language I'm most comfortable with, and it's really easy as well to build data structures and perform file I/O. Although Perl has this reputation as inscrutable line noise. I can sometimes see where people come from, but I pretty much n...

Re: Google Codejam

Yep. (I'm using the same username as the forum on the contest if anyone cares.) Any good ideas on how to go about solving the tennis racket problem from the qualifier? I drove myself in circles for 24 hours before being satisfied that answering the first two were enough to get me to move on. I just...

Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

Fleeting thought: I know C, Perl, and assembly. Until now, my style convention has been that all_variables_should_be_underscored. I am now teaching myself Java, and the Java naming convention is that allVariablesShouldHaveCapitalLettersAndNoUnderscores. Since it's all style, does it really matter if...

Re: Perl File Read (beating head against a wall)

Good luck with that. I taught myself Perl only about 6 months ago and I'm an intern who was at one point on 4-5 different projects so I know how it is. If you're dealing with CSVs and you need them parsed in Perl, I strongly suggesting going to CPAN and grabbing Text::CSV_XS. Makes reading and writi...

Re: Perl File Read (beating head against a wall)

thanks for the post. First off I figured out why it wasn't running, the fact that I didn't have the variables being reset inside of the foreach loop was causing a divide by 0 error (/facepalm). Oh, I guess this make sense; my bad for not catching this either, haha. I also saw that you had a for loo...

Re: "Good Morning" discussion

I work at the Phoenix Mars Lander, and I'm on Mars time (24.6 hour day).

I can totally relate to these guys. Yesterday I woke up at 4 in the afternoon and went to work around 9:30. Today's my day off, but tomorrow I go in around 1 AM.

Re: Perl File Read (beating head against a wall)

Okay, I'm trying to get a handle on your code. You're saying that the foreach loop fails to iterate over the entire array, right? My only guess is that something is wrong with your glob, i.e., it's returning a list of exactly one item. After you glob, print the array and see if all the files you wan...

Re: worst bugs ever (or your most hated)

I STILL haven't gotten this figured out, and actually if anyone knows what the hell is going on I'd greatly appreciate it. I have a Perl script that queries a server for data. I use some modules, but due to network restrictions those modules can only be placed in my /home/ directory. Using the shban...

Re: so maths is useful for what now?

As a jeweler, you'll be dealing a lot with crystals (duh). The math behind crystallography defines the shapes, colors, strength, etc., of the material.

Re: slice column from perl multidimensional array [RESOLVED]

Just from a purely stylistic standpoint, it's WAY easy to read if you dereference with -> than dereferencing explicitly by type, so $$_[0] becomes $_->[0]. I started out dereferencing everything the second way, and with the data structures I'd build, I'd get something like: for my $n (keys %{${${$_[...

Time to learn a new language!

So I've been coding in Perl for the past few months now for my job, and I learned C last semester and assembly this semester. I'm diggin' it all, and Perl has definitely gotten me through my job so far (data collection/analysis). I figure it's about time to learn a new language. Something OO. I know...
