Re: The Chicago-area small n' cozy meetup (MEETUP 3: MARCH 21)

And pleased to do it! Glad you enjoyed it and great to meet you, joeframbach! And now that this has happened, well I'm not exactly offering to organize but I *am* offering to take all y'all on a tour of Fermi, if y'all'd like. It's fun!

You are certainly on the right track! I love Joy Yee. But 4pm is a bit early for those of us who work, unless I stay home that day. If a bunch of us agree to come though I'll skip out on work!

Re: Cambervillain Unstoppable Meetup Thread (Boston Area)

I only used to live in Cambridge, but I was browsing here and decided I MUST say that I would be at the Lonnie Thompson lecture if I could (that sophyturtle spoilered). I saw his slideshow presentation at Fermilab when he gave it and it was Awesome. It's a talk about global warming and historical at...

Re: Spain in October

Yes, Toledo is a wonderful place to visit if you are near Madrid. It's very medieval (there's even a museum of torture devices used during the Inquisition!), and if you know El Greco you can see the views of the town almost exactly as he painted them four hundred years ago or whenever. They also spe...

Re: The Chicago-area small n' cozy meetup (MEETUP 3: MARCH 21)

It's only slightly likely that I would go see Planet Earth at River East on Wednesday. I missed the March announcement. But I'm eager to meet up. I'm a little hesitant to do the 4pm geohashing tomorrow (it's all the way at Kankakee, straight shot on the highway though ) but would be willing to take ...

Re: "Friends" Discussion

Am I happy ? Probably not. But I'm content, and the lonely feelings crop up less and less as I get older. Society attaches a stigma to being single, like the entire purpose of living is to find a mate (and evolutionarily speaking, I suppose it may be, but one benefit of our evolutionary advantages ...

Re: "Friends" Discussion

It's like the entire universe around me went into suddenly sharp focus without realizing it was not in focus before and at the same instant was suddenly upside-down. (...) So... yea... I have some work to do, and habits to break. My head feels like it's going to explode and I'm a kaleidoscope of em...

Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

Fiction rule of thumb 1b: the rule of thumb shall be applied with inverse proportionality to the number of apostrophes in your made up words(plus 1). Quality = RoTscore/(apostrophes+1) Seriously. If your language has so many redundant letters that you need three apostrophes just to say the name of ...

Re: "Turn-On" Discussion

*Lovesick sigh* XKCD, you complete me. How is it you describe me so, so perfectly? That's me, right there. I spent the night at a pajama party at Fermilab to watch first injection, but if I didn't I'd be right there at the bar turning end-of-the-world hype into sex. *sigh again with silly grin* By t...

Re: Upper Midwest US (MN, WI, ND, SD, IL, etc)

Hey, so there's a thing in Chicago this weekend, the Red Bull Flugtag. A bunch of people from Fermilab are going to make it out there, so it would be neat to see more XKCD-ians. http://www.redbullflugtagusa.com/Chicago2008 We'll meet at 11am at North Beach and PM me for my mobile #. Right, and actua...

Re: SUPRIZE MEETUP! In Chicago. - JUNE 21 - THAT'S NEXT SATURDAY

I feel like an ass; I overslept AND I couldn't find a cab. I finally made it to Buckingham fountain at 2:25 but I missed everyone. To apologize to LSK, I offer to take you (and anyone else who wants to come) with me to the next geohashing.

Re: SUPRIZE MEETUP! In Chicago. - JUNE 21 - THAT'S NEXT SATURDAY

so meeting after at field museum? I think we all walk over there together, no? after the meeting at the bean? But I propose we first take a detour to watch the zombies march. They're going to start in the middle of the loop (Daley Plaza?) and end up at Millenium Park. Also later in the evening, bes...

Re: Storm chasing

I see. You're right, of course, that I don't know how these things work. I guess I thought there was a more systematic network of information for storm buffs. I'll do more research about risks, preparedness, etc. before I try going out there, although it should be awhile as I don't think tornados co...

Storm chasing

Hi guys, I live in Chicago, and lately (i.e., tonight) I noticed an actual tornado warning/watch about 60 miles south of the city. The thing is, I have no idea how to pursue this. There're websites with radar updating but no zoom in for a map overlay, so I'd have to crawl over a whole county to find...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi, I wasn't planning to post here but I like so many of you! from here on this side of the monitor. So I'll do it anyway. I'm Tatiana, 26, a graduate student living in Chicago and working at Fermilab. I have very vague and disparate ideas about what I want to do with the rest of my life (the part t...

Re: "Every Damn Morning" Discussion

Well, the reason everyone says "HE'S IN MY HEAD!!" is that we never hear these things discussed anywhere else, on TV shows or popular news articles or even that much among friends. At least, that is true for me. But I agree saying it over and over is REALLY annoying. You're not special. Or...

Re: "Geohashing" discussion

I'm also a little confused; using the tool on http://xkcd.com/geohashing for the date on the comic, I got: http://irc.peeron.com/xkcd/map/map.html?date=2005-05-26&lat=37&long=-123&zoom=8&abs=1 but that is clearly different from the position in the comic, a rather lovely spot in "...

Re: SUPRIZE MEETUP! In Chicago.

Do you guys all know each other? Would you accept an adventure-seeking stranger trying to make friends in this city? Is... what? there an instrument requirement? I can bring castanets. And if I end up feeling cool with you guys offer my place in Ukrainian Village to crash.
